Q&A time?!
Q: Can I use HQ-containing products in the summertime?
A: Yes, but...(yes, there's a but)!
Hydroquinone (HQ) works by inhibiting melanin production, which helps fade hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and melasma.
Technically, it can be applied any time of year if your skin tolerates it and you pair it with proper sun protection.
However, there are a few reasons by HQ may not be ideal in summer:
1. Increased sun exposure: UV light stimulates melanin production. Using HQ without strict sun protection can make your skin more prone to irritation or paradoxical darkening.
2. Skin sensitivity: HQ can make skin more reactive to sun, heat, and sweat, increasing the risk of redness, peeling, or burning.
3. Efficacy risk: Sun exposure can counteract the pigment-fading effects, making treatment less effective.
So, HQ can be used in summer BUT only with very diligent daily SPF (broad-spectrum 30+ or higher), sun avoidance, and gentle skincare routines. We personally prefer starting HQ in fall/winter when sun exposure is lower, then pausing or adjusting use in the summer (referred to as pulse therapy).
