National Child Day is a reminder to celebrate the rights, voices, and well-being of every child. Today, we honour children’s resilience, joy, and the importance of supporting them to grow, learn, thrive and belong in safe and nurturing environments. 💛

National Child Day is celebrated on November 20 and reaffirms our country’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC.) The UNCRC outlines our responsibility in keeping our children safe, healthy and engaged. By celebrating National Child Day you’re helping raise awareness of the rights of children, and contributing to a healthy environment where children can thrive.

This commitment includes:
-protecting children from harm
-ensuring children's basic needs are met
-providing children opportunities to have a voice (speak out and be heard)

November is Indigenous Disability Awareness Month 🧡

11/18/2025

This Indigenous Disability Awareness Month, we invite you to listen to and learn from Indigenous perspectives of disability. We are honoured to share teachings from Laranna Scott, FSI’s Indigenous Practice Advisor.

In most of Turtle Island's Indigenous languages, there is no direct translation for "disability"—the deficit-based view of individual personhood and the concept of disability as we know it today are colonial constructs.

Instead, Indigenous cultures frame notions of personhood and capability in a relational way: Métis culture has the concept of kaa-wiichihitoyaahk, best translated as “we take care of each other.”

Laranna explains more in this 1-hour interview for the Oral Histories of Indigenous Disability initiative. In the video, she offers Indigenous perspectives on the value of inclusion. No matter how much support someone needs, “there’s always room in the circle.”

She speaks about the Child’s Circle of Support model, developed with Aboriginal Supported Child Development, which earned her a provincial award from the BC Aboriginal Child Care Society.

We are grateful to Laranna and the Voices of Inclusion: Oral Histories of Indigenous Disability project by Indigenous Disability Canada/B.C Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (IDC/BCANDS) for this valuable teaching.
