Prairie Centre for Mindfulness

Prairie Centre for Mindfulness The concept of mindfulness is at the core of Joanne’s work with people.

Prairie Centre for Mindfulness offers a wide range of mindfulness-based services and retreats to individuals, organizations, schools and businesses in Saskatchewan and internationally. Prairie Centre for Mindfulness was founded by Joanne Frederick, Registered Psychologist, as a way to offer individuals, groups and a wide range of organizations, schools and businesses learn about the benefits of integrating mindfulness into their lives. She has completed the intensive requirements to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) through the Center for Mindfulness (CFM), University of Massachusetts Medical School. MBSR is an evidence-based program that combines meditation and gentle yoga as tools in learning how to use mind and body to do what no one else can do for you: take charge of your health and feel more in control of your life. It is the gold standard of mindfulness-based programs and is supported by over three decades of research. As the only Registered Psychologist in Saskatchewan to have completed the rigorous training through the CFM, Joanne offers MBSR and mindfulness-based professional services in not only Regina, but across Saskatchewan and beyond. She is a dynamic teacher and presenter who skillfully blends her knowledge, wisdom and experience with equal parts of warmth, humour and compassion.

It was at a retreat in Mexico in November 2022...offered by an organization called SHE RECOVERS...where I discovered the transformational wonders of spending a week at an oceanfront villa with a group of magnificent women. The experience changed my life, as did finding SHE RECOVERS when I was recovering from caregiving fatigue and grief.

It was my wish for other women to be able to have the same transformational experience so last year, The Feminary Retreats were born as I partnered with one of the co-founders of SHE RECOVERS...Dawn Nickel...to host two retreats in Mexico. They were such incredible experiences that we planned to offer three in winter 2026. Those three retreats sold out so quickly that we decided to offer two more.

Dates of those two additional retreats are January 17-24, 2026 OR February 28 to March 7, 2026. Join me and Dawn for a beautiful week of nourishing your mind, body and soul at a luxurious villa near Cancun. You'll be surprised at what a week "for you" will do.

These retreats will sell out quickly so reserve your spot today! Links are below.

I'm adding new offerings for folks who are interested in retreating this winter to Mexico. Details below. Join me, won't you?

We are delighted that you are curious about the upcoming retreat and want to keep you informed of all the steps we are taking to curate an experience that is nourishing, restorative and infused with meaningful connection with self and others.

As we’ve already selected a luxuriously private and peaceful oceanfront villa and conversed with the hosts, the next step is to visit the location (November 5-7) to meet the hosts, plan menus with the chef and her team, and finalize all details for the retreat. We’re grateful to the owners, Mariana and Carl, for accommodating our request to visit. Their experience in hosting retreats is apparent and makes for smooth and professional planning.

Once all the details are finalized, we will share them here and will be using WeTravel for registering for the retreat. Registration will open on November 11. The link to our WeTravel will be provided here on that date. In the meantime, we are happy to provide a summary of the retreat details to date:

• retreat dates are January 27 - February 3, 2024.
• villa is oceanfront and located 20 km from the Cancun airport. Start looking into flights!
• there will be at least 12 spots available…possibly more.
• as food is such an important component of the retreat experience, menus will be created to honour as many dietary needs as possible. Meals and snacks will be gluten, dairy and sugar free. Vegetarian options will be provided.
• the retreat will be an alcohol and drug free experience so as to support and honour women recovering from substance-related challenges and those who may be sober curious.
• yoga and guided meditation will be offered twice daily. There will also be opportunities to gather in circle for curious conversation and ceremony. Additional activities to be announced. Participation in activities will be entirely optional.
• a massage therapist will be available. Her one hour massages are $75 USD.

Stay tuned for posts about “the why” behind our decision to offer a retreat, how our paths crossed, the meaning behind the term “feminary”, and a whole lot of other interesting tidbits about us and this beautiful labour of love.

It's that time of year again when planning events such as book clubs, courses, and retreats (one day, weekend, or perhaps longer) is in the works. I love creating events based on needs and requests from the folks who follow this page. So, what say you? What's on your wish list?

I hate to be the one to break it to you
or remind you of what you already know
but you’re never gonna get it right.
Never solve the great puzzle
and just kick back
in a warm bath of bliss and lovely candlelit skin.
It will continue to be
as it has been,
kind at times
and uncomfortable as hell at others,
Your neatly packaged solutions
of inspirational speakers,
religious rule books
and lithe yoga bodies
aren’t going to cut the mustard
in this intimate, intricate,
messy meeting of flesh and spirit,
of heaven and mossy green
wildly-sprouting vibrant earth.
Sorry, but if you came here only for bliss
then I think you may be in the wrong place….
Fear not!
‘cos love is greater than you think
and you are more than you know.
Learn to be the one who gives thanks
for the whole wild dance
of pain and beauty that we must perform,
the reds and oranges of this exquisite artwork
are not worth more
than the dark blues or browns
that catch the light just so
on an October afternoon.
Take a tentative and sincere step towards the altar
and feel your knees grow soft
drawing close to whatever
you choose to call god.
The closer you come to her
the more the painting comes into focus
swathes of colour and texture
arching across a great and endless canvas.
The scene is too wonderful
even for your kind eyes
made clear by the water of devotion
But you can see enough to know
that this is the high art,
great symphonies, sculptures and pure-voiced choirs
woven into a chorus of gold,
that this humble, ordinary life of yours
with its scraped knees and heartache
is unique and perfect and good,
that the pain flavours the dreams
to bring forth tastes you could not have imagined
in your bathtub of bliss.
There are great plains of grass
spread across your heart
where all flowers grow unchecked
and when you lie back
and allow the thorns and the daisies
to twine about you
and form your earthy bed
Your eyes will be drawn to the light
Of that eternal sun which warms your sweet skin
and turns every shifting colour
into an sea of gold.
