During Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, we are reminded that cancer prevention starts with our everyday routines. Every time our truck returns to the station, we connect it to a diesel exhaust fume extractor system 🚒 This ensures our station, gear, and team are protected from the health hazards associated with both short and long-term exposure to diesel exhaust.

January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️Firefighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service. In Canada, where most provinces and territories have robust presumptive laws, close to 94% of line-of-duty deaths among professional firefighters are the result of occupational cancers.

The World Health Organization has classified firefighter occupational exposure as a group 1 carcinogen. For more information, please visit this website:

This Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, we’re highlighting the importance of respiratory protection. Protective equipment like respiratory masks plays a critical role in reducing firefighters’ exposure to toxic and carcinogenic airborne contaminants. Respiratory protection is needed during both fire supression, fire scene clean up and investigation, as well as during decontamination itself. Having the right protection at the right time helps safeguard firefighters’ long-term health. IAFF Local 80 remains committed to prevention and protection
