We are Local 80 of the IAFF. We are proud to represent over 320 members of the Saskatoon Fire Dept.

This month IAFF Local 80 members participated in annual ice dive training. Our water emergency response team completes these training scenarios under the ice every year to maintain one of the certifications in rescue diving. Team members include divers, surface water rescue members, and members from the training division. Ice diving is a highly technical skill, and it takes approximately 1 week to get all of our divers to complete the training, not including set up and take down of the site.

Dispatcher Kristie McNair is the recipient of the Honour Guard member of the year award. Kristie is recognized as having a near perfect attendance record for all the practices and events that the Honour Guard attends. Even on short notice, Kristie is always there. Kristie has been a role model for newer members and is relied upon for her leadership. Congratulations Kristie!

Firefighters across Canada face increased exposure to carcinogens every time they answer a call. Protecting those who protect our communities must remain a priority.

Recently, British Columbia added 8 additional cancers to its presumptive coverage legislation, bringing their total to 26 covered cancers, now the most comprehensive firefighter cancer protections in Canada. The province also reduced the qualifying service period for esophageal cancer from 20 years to 15 years.

For years, Saskatchewan has been a leader in presumptive cancer legislation for firefighters. As other provinces continue to strengthen protections for their members, we hope to see continued advocacy here at home to ensure these additional cancers are also recognized for Saskatchewan firefighters.

Today is International Women’s Day 👏👩‍🚒 IAFF Local 80 is proud of all of our women in our fire service that protects saskatoon. The first woman and trailblazer to join IAFF Local 80 as a firefighter was in 1992.
The challenges that go along with joining a male- dominated workforce wasn’t easy, and can still be seen today with issues such as separate facilities in our firehalls, which have recently been corrected ✅

Early Tuesday morning, members of IAFF Local 80 responded to a semi truck fire near Circle Drive and Millar Avenue.

Upon arrival, crews found a semi truck and trailer unit that had struck a light pole and erupted into flames. Thanks to their rapid response and coordinated efforts, the fire was brought under control and no injuries were reported.

Anna Fairbairn is the recipient of the 2025 Budz-Guenter Memorial Scholarship. She is taking bio med at the University of Saskatchewan. She is the daughter of a current SFD Captain. The Budz-Guenter Memorial Scholarship was created in the honour of Saskatoon Firefighters Victor Budz and Dennis Guenter who died in the line of duty on May 31, 1980. The scholarship is jointly funded by the City of Saskatoon and IAFF local 80 and pays for the first year of the recipient’s schooling.
