Jordan's Principle- Brokenhead Ojibway Nation Children living on First Nation's communities have the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential

Jordan River Anderson was a First Nation child born with a rare disorder who required hospitalization from birth. The provincial and federal governments could not agree on who was financially responsible for his care in a medical foster home. Jordan's condition worsened and he passed away in hospital before both government levels could resolve who would pay for provided services. On December 12, 2007, the House of Commons unanimously supported a Private Member's motion. The motion focused on adopting an approach that addresses First Nations children's needs first.

The kindergartens from Sergeant Tommy Prince School spent the day on the land, guided by the LandBased team as knowledge holders sharing teachings rooted in care, responsibility, and relationship. Through being present on the ice, children learned in ways that are experiential, relational, and grounded in respect for the water, the fish, and one another.

This time on the land supports cultural revitalization and affirms Indigenous ways of knowing, reminding us that learning is holistic and interconnected. We are grateful for the guidance, shared teachings, and the opportunity for our youngest learners to build meaningful connections through land-based learning.
