Residents win against a bigger 4G/5G mast!

The community of Lytham St Annes already lives next to an existing mobile mast, which many consider an eyesore. Plans to replace it with a taller 20‑metre structure for 4G/5G have now been blocked by Fylde Borough Council after strong local objections.

Estate agents confirm that masts devalue houses. Health concerns were raised by one objector, who had a pacemaker fitted in 2022. They said they had already switched to a basic smartphone due to the impact of their device, adding:
"There will be other nearby residents with a pacemaker or implanted cardiac device. Planning must surely consider the health of its constituents."

The council officer noted that the applicant declared compliance with ICNIRP guidelines, and that national planning policy states councils “should not set health safeguards different from the International Commission guidelines for public exposure.”

The EM Radiation Research Trust notes that local authorities have statutory responsibilities to safeguard the health of residents, particularly vulnerable populations, under domestic planning law and the Health and Social Care Act 2012, Section 2B. ICNIRP guidelines are advisory, not statutory limits, and do not absolve councils from considering evidence of potential harm.
