Most people think the ADHD Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is decided by the diagnosis.

It isn’t.

The DTC is decided by how ADHD affects everyday functioning — attention, memory, planning, organization, and the strategies people need just to get through daily life.

This is where many applications stall.

Not because the diagnosis isn’t real.
But because the doctor doesn’t have enough functional detail to describe the impact clearly on the form.

Many people go to their appointment with:
• their diagnosis
• maybe a medication list
• and the CRA form

But what’s missing are the real-life examples that help a doctor explain how ADHD affects day-to-day functioning most of the time.

I created the visual below to show the step that often gets missed in the process.

It walks through the difference between:
going to the appointment unprepared
vs.
going with clear examples of functional impact.

If you’re starting the process, I also created a free ADHD + DTC Starter Guide that helps people begin identifying and organizing those examples.

This resource is educational and meant to help people understand the process and prepare for conversations with their healthcare provider.

A quiet truth I’ve noticed working in healthcare.

Over the years working in healthcare, I’ve watched something happen again and again.

People come into appointments knowing their life is harder than it should be… but when they’re asked to explain how, the words disappear.

Not because the struggles aren’t real.

But because translating everyday chaos — missed steps, forgotten things, mental exhaustion, the constant effort to keep life together — into clear examples on the spot is incredibly hard.

Especially when you’ve spent years trying to look like you’re managing.

I started creating simple tools to help people slow that process down.

To give them space to notice their real experiences and put them into words before they sit across from a doctor or fill out paperwork that expects a perfect explanation.

Not because people need to prove they’re struggling.

But because the systems that decide support often rely on clear language.

If you’ve ever walked out of an appointment thinking
“I forgot to say half of what I meant…”

you’re not alone.

And you’re not failing.

Sometimes you just need a little more structure to help your story come through.

Why does ADHD feel obvious in everyday life… but impossible to explain during a doctor appointment?

Many people with ADHD think about applying for the Disability Tax Credit…
but never actually start the process.

Not because they aren’t eligible. But because the whole process feels overwhelming.

Forms.
Appointments.
Trying to explain years of struggles in a short conversation with a doctor.

It’s easy to think:

“Where would I even begin explaining all of this?”

As a nurse, I’ve seen how difficult it can be for people to describe how ADHD affects everyday functioning during a short medical appointment.

The Disability Tax Credit looks at something very specific called mental functions necessary for everyday life.

Things like:

• attention
• memory
• planning and starting tasks
• emotional regulation
• managing everyday responsibilities

When people try to explain this on the spot, many leave their appointment feeling like the important parts never actually got said.

Sometimes the biggest barrier isn’t eligibility.

It’s simply knowing how to organize and communicate those real-life experiences clearly.

That’s one of the reasons I created a simple preparation guide to help people reflect on their everyday experiences before speaking with their doctor.

If that would be helpful for you, feel free to ask and I’m happy to share it.

And I’m curious:
Have you ever thought about applying for the DTC but felt overwhelmed about where to even start?

If you’ve ever posted in a DTC group asking “I have ADHD — do I qualify?” you’re not alone.
The answer isn’t about your diagnosis. It’s about how your ADHD affects your daily functioning — and most people have no idea how to explain that.
That’s exactly the gap I built Waypoint to fill. 👇

As a Registered Practical Nurse I kept seeing the same pattern — people with real, significant struggles who couldn’t get approved because they couldn’t describe their functional impairment in the language CRA and healthcare providers actually need.
So I created two resources to help:
📋 The Waypoint ADHD Functional Impact Starter Guide — free
Walks you through all 10 mental function domains CRA looks at, with real-life examples so you can finally recognize and name your patterns.
📝 The Waypoint ADHD Functional Impact Preparation Workbook
A guided space to document your strongest real-life examples — organized exactly the way your doctor needs to see them.
If this is where you are right now — grab the free guide first.
It costs nothing and it might change everything. 💙

I help individuals navigate complex healthcare and disability systems by preparing, organizing,
and clearly communicating their real-life functional challenges.

My focus includes:

• ADHD and mental function documentation
• Disability Tax Credit (DTC) preparation
• Organizing medical records and supporting evidence
• Preparing for productive doctor conversations

Many people struggle to explain how their condition affects everyday functioning. I help translate
those real-life experiences into clear examples that healthcare professionals can understand and document.
