Have you ever wondered how birch bark oil is created?
Here’s a closer look at the traditional-meets-modern process we use in Cape Breton.

Everything begins in the forest, where fallen birch bark is gathered with respect for Mi’kma’ki and the land that sustains us. Once brought to the lab, the bark is gently cleaned, dried, and prepared.

From there, it goes into a special extractor designed to heat the bark in low oxygen — similar to a traditional campfire technique. Instead of burning, the bark slowly transforms, releasing vapours that cool into a rich, dark oil.

This birch bark oil is then carefully analyzed and blended in small batches to create Maskwiomin’s signature creams and soaps.
A process rooted in Indigenous knowledge, carried forward with science, and crafted with care here in Cape Breton.
