None of us really know what it looks like to survive and thrive beyond a global . Thankfully, past research about disaster response has produced some resources we can adapt, so we don't have to start at square one in figuring out how to care for ourselves, support others, and care for our communities.

Based on that work, we can expect some emotional tumbling in the weeks and months to come. Rather than responding with fear, consider this an invitation to make a plan: thinking now about how we can plan to give ourselves extraordinary care and check-in more with the people we care about in the coming months can help support ourselves and others into the recovery phase.

Did you know the are FREE manuals for best-practices for doing and other person-to-person care in the aftermath of a disaster? I've posted a link to two of my favorites on my website: https://lindsaybraman.com/phases-of-disaster
This graph (adapted from an open-source resource published by the US Department of Health and Human Services using WA-DOH data to locate our "we are here") can be downloaded in poster form via my website.

As I thought about this graphic in the context of disaster, I realized that it extends to many single-event -like how a family responds to a sudden death in the family, how a small town might respond to the closing of a major employer, or how an identity group might respond to a single-event hate crime. Note that for the black community and many other marginalized groups, trauma is *ongoing*. Although it's not the topic of this post, the impact of this chronic stress is profound, unique, and requires our attention. Check out on Instagram for good educational content in this area.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) can affect both your mental and/or physical health.
Everyone has feelings of anxiety at some point in their life. For example, you may feel worried and anxious about giving a speech, or having a job interview.
Feeling anxious at times can be perfectly normal.
But some people find it hard to control their worries. Their feelings of anxiety are more constant and can often affect their daily lives.
GAD is an anxiety disorder that causes you to feel anxious about a wide range of situations and issues, rather than 1 specific event.
People with GAD feel anxious most days and can’t relax very well.
As soon as 1 anxious thought is resolved, another may appear about a different issue, often about things in the future that might never happen.
If you struggle with your mental health it’s wise to seek professional help from a GP, therapist, school nurse/counsellor or any other professional. If you are not in the position to look for professional help try talking with a friend or call a helpline, This article provides many numbers.
