At our last newborn care class, a thoughtful new parent asked

“What newborn recommendations have changed over the years? And how do we know what’s being recommended today won’t be considered unsafe later?”

Such an important question !

Parenting advice has absolutely evolved over the decades. As research improves and we learn more about infant development, sleep physiology, feeding, and safety, recommendations shift. That doesn’t mean previous parents were careless. It means we continue to grow in our understanding !

That curiosity inspired us to head to e-bay and order these vintage prenatal and infant care books.

We’ll be sharing excerpts in our newborn care classes so families can see just how much has changed and why !

Some examples of changes over time include
Sleep spaces once filled with pillows, bumpers, and toys are now recommended to be clear and firm
Car seat standards and positioning guidelines
Hospital nursery practices and rooming in.
Strict feeding schedules versus responsive on -demand feeding
Evolving conversations around sleep training .
Nipple shapes and bottle design
Strong recommendations for room sharing in the early months to reduce SIDS risk 🤍

While guidance evolves, some principles remain steady. We prioritize what is strongly evidence based and safety focused, such as safe sleep and SIDS prevention guidelines. From there, we help families make informed decisions that align with their values, culture, and lifestyle.

The goal is not perfection. It’s informed, supported, responsive parenting !
We look forward to seeing you at our next class 🤎

Getting a good latch is key to a comfortable and successful breastfeeding journey. A proper latch helps your baby feed effectively while keeping you comfortable and preventing ni**le pain.

Signs your baby is feeding well
• Gentle, rhythmic sucking and swallowing
• Lips flared out, nose close to the breast
• Full cheeks, not sucked in
• Breast feels softer after feeding
• Baby is calm and satisfied after feeding
• Regular wet and dirty diapers
• No significant ni**le pain after the first few minutes

Signs your baby may not be feeding well
• Lips tight or tucked in, not flared
• Chewing or biting rather than sucking
• No swallowing sounds
• Ni***es feel cracked, sore, or painful
• Baby seems fussy or unsatisfied after feeds
• Few wet or dirty diapers
• Baby falls asleep immediately without actively feeding

This birth was full of joy, family, perseverance, and above all, love 💫❤️
We had the absolute pleasure of supporting this beautiful family as they welcomed their little one into the world 🌍👶🏽 Surrounded by tenderness, this birth reminded us how powerful it is when community, support, and care come together in the birthing space.

✨From the quiet moments of labour to the first latch and warm embraces ,every second was a story worth holding onto.
We’re so thrilled to now offer birth photography 📸 as part of our services so you can document those unforgettable moments during birth and the sacred postpartum days.
