Is it Perimenopause?
This question comes up A LOT. Changes in perimenopause can vary & may not be as obvious as hot flashes. Brain fog, joint pain, insulin resistance, weight changes, increased anxiety or insomnia can all show up. Changes to vaginal and urinary health, and even immune changes can show up around this time as well. And even trickier – any and all of these changes could be caused by something else. There’s often overlap where cause is concerned, and how we experience perimenopause will be impacted hugely by our general state of health.
So, if it seems like something is slightly off, different or definitely out of whack – talk to your ND. Together, we can figure out what’s going on, and figure out how to make this major life transition as smooth as possible. And if it’s not perimenopause, we can figure out what the heck else is going on!
We don’t have to accept every unpleasant change in our health status as an inevitability. The power is in your hands!

This November I was challenged to move out of my comfort zone, and change the way I interact with colleagues in my profession.
The Ontario association of Naturopathic Doctors asked me to speak on a panel at their annual conference. The panel “Do No Harm: Unpacking Unconscious Bias and Inequity in Clinical Encounters” intended to open a conversation in our ND community by way of storytelling.
I was asked to share my experience on stage in front of a group of my peers. My very real hesitation about participating encouraged me to unpack the ways that I’ve kept quiet about the parts of my identity that are likely to cause friction – in society generally, as well as among my peers.

New Blog Post: How do I know if it’s perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the window of time where the body gradually undergoes the transition to menopause, or the end of the menstrual cycle. Reproductive hormone levels will fluctuate as they work towards an overall decline in production.

Ovulation may begin to happen less frequently, menstrual cycles can become shorter at first, then become longer and somewhat unpredictable in terms of timing and flow. Other changes may include hot flashes, night sweats, changes in libido or vaginal dryness, mood changes (including mood swings, increased anxiety and/or depression), trouble with sleep, headaches or changes in ability to focus.

Contrary to what you may have heard, there’s a lot we can do to smooth out this transition. Hormonal Replacement Therapy is just one option among many other natural and hormone free supports available. Check out my blog post for more (link in bio).

Walk confidently into menopause knowing that your s*x life need not suffer - there are supports available to help maintain the health and hydration of vaginal tissue, and to support a robust libido after menopause.

I’m delighted to announce my to return to Urban Wellness!

It’s been a big year for me with a new addition to my family and navigating the balance of returning to work. I always strive to walk my talk, so figuring out how to do the work I love while making space for family life has been a key part of re-building my schedule this year.

Starting May 15, I will offer virtual and in-person visits Wednesdays 9am-2pm. Hours may expand as the need and ability arises. If you are looking to book and can’t find a time that works, I invite you to add yourself to the waitlist. This helps me to know who is looking for support, and I can do my best to accommodate.

I look forward to seeing you in the Urban Wellness space again!

Urban Wellness is a multidisciplinary clinic in the heart of Toronto. Located on College at Bathurst, this beautiful and unique urban oasis features a delightful assortment of skilled practitioners present to support you (they’re also a joy to work with!).

The misery of PMS is avoidable! We are not irrational, unreliable, or hysterical by virtue of our monthly cycle. PMS doesn’t have to be something to dread. It doesn’t have to feel like we’re out of control. If you feel a stark dip in your mental health 1-2 weeks (or even a few days) before your period, we can support you. If you get intense headaches, bloating, cramps, impossible to satisfy cravings, we can support you. If you get notable digestive changes before and during your period, we can support you.

PMS doesn’t have to ruin your month. We can help.

PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) are very real, and treatments to improve or eliminate your symptoms are available.

There are a variety of factors that contribute to the appearance or aggravation of symptoms around your period. We take these factors into account to target your needs and come up with an effective treatment plan to get you feeling well throughout the month.

Have you heard about health, but aren’t sure if you may be affected? Ever wondered what the thyroid really does?
🦋
Symptoms of thyroid problems may show up as sleep trouble, weight challenges, hair loss, dry skin, heart rate and temperature changes, constipation, as well as focus and memory issues. Heavy, painful periods can also be a symptom.
👐
Thyroid impact our whole body, so it can be a lot to take in. I wrote an article about it to help clarify things – check it out on my blog (link in bio). I’ve posted some info here too.

Image 1: text “Butterfly Effect: All you ever wanted to know about thyroid health” kristenmarknd.com/blog Text on upper frame, lower frame with blue butterfly on a yellow flower

Image 2: text” A hormone secreting gland: The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland found in front of the throat. It makes hormones that have a huge role to play in just about every bodily system”

Image 3: text “Thyroid dysfunction: When things go wrong symptoms like sleep trouble, weight challenges, hair loss, dry skin, heart rate and temperature changes, constipation, focus and memory issues and period problems can show up”

Image 4: text: HYPOthyroidism: The thyroid is UNDER producing. When there's not enough thyroid hormone, TSH will be high.
VS
HYPERthyroidism: The thyroid is OVER producing. When there's too much thyroid hormone, TSH will be low

Image 5: text: “More than a hormone problem: There's a lot more to thyroid health than just treating hormone levels. Gut health, stress and dietary intake can all have a huge impact.

My Labs are normal, so why don’t I feel normal?

Have you ever gone to your family doctor for blood work, and get told everything is normal so nothing is wrong? But wait, you still don’t feel well – how do they know everything is ok? Even though blood work can be “normal” or within the reference range, we can still gain some deeper understanding of what’s happening in our bodies from those values.

If the blood work is “normal”, but you don’t feel “normal”, then the work is not over! Labs can provide valuable information, but they don’t tell us everything.

When we support patients, we consider the subtleties of lab work beyond the broad framework of references range. We also never discount the person sitting in front of us. Your experience is the primary guideline for determining the best route of care.

My goal is always to support you through your healing journey, and that includes investigating and explaining the nuances of lab values, and treating your lived experience as valid and important to the context of care.
