Strength training alone will not lead to improved gait patterns.

While strength is an essential part of any runner’s routine and can be considered the “hardware” of movement 💪, it is the motor pattern or “software” that ultimately controls movement quality.

Running is a coordinated motor skill 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️. Let’s start treating it like one.

There’s certainly no one-size-fits-all solution, but it’s impossible to ignore the role of running technique in both running related injury and performance. If you’re a clinician or coach working with runners, investing in your ability to assess and improve your athletes’ gait patterns is key 🔑.

At a one year follow up, runners who had undergone a two week gait retraining program reported 62% fewer injuries and had a 20% reduction in impact loading in comparison to a control group. It’s worth considering how you can use cues effectively!
