🧠🎨 A Powerful Metaphor for the Human Struggle

For my Bibliotherapy fans, a personal favourite - 📖 Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

This painting, inspired by Faust, powerfully illustrates the inner battle between despair and resilience. We see two figures locked in a game of chess: Man and Satan. The stakes are high—his soul hangs in the balance.

Man sits on the right, visibly distraught, seemingly cornered, as though facing checkmate. Satan, by contrast, appears smug and self-assured, not even bothering to look at the board—convinced of his victory.

In the background, an angel looks on, her expression heavy with sorrow—perhaps reflecting our own moments of hopelessness.

But here’s the deeper question:
Is the game really over? Or is there still a move left—one that only a shift in perspective can reveal?

This image invites us to reflect on how easily we can feel defeated by our thoughts, emotions, or circumstances. As a psychologist, I often remind clients that even in moments of despair, there may still be possibilities we haven’t considered.
