The Toronto collective's events embody the notion that a few changes can make the difference between disabled ravers staying home out of caution, or going out for a potentially transformative night.

Crip Raveā„¢ Collective Presents…

ā€œSculpting with Soundā€ is an introductory sound production workshop facilitated by Kristel Jax.

Do you want to explore sound from a Crip perspective?

Join us on September 4th 2021 from 2PM - 4PM EST and play with the multi-sensory nature of sound as we co-create an understanding with us about what it means to Crip Sound.

The workshop will de-emphasize software but will also offer an introduction to some of the basic building blocks of sound, such as waveforms, vibrations, decibels, sheet music, and spectrographs.

Participants are invited to submit a short recording (1 - 15 seconds long) of their favourite sound or sound-making event or texture to be explored and collaged with during the workshop. We will engage with the sounds that folks submit, demonstrating the different ways that sound can be accessed and played with— highlighting that sound is not only auditory, but is a tactile, visual, colourful, and emotional sculpting material. Please visit the Eventbrite for details on how to prepare your submission and email it to crip.rave.collective@gmail.com by August 23rd to have it included in the collage.

You do not need to submit a recording to participate in the workshop. All aspects are optional.

Please register on Eventbrite to attend this free online event:

This workshop will be capped at 20 participants. Register early!

Check out the Eventbrite link and Facebook event for more information:

Please email Renee or Stefana with any other access needs, feedback, or questions at: crip.rave.collective@gmail.com

CRIP RAVEā„¢

CRIP RAVEā„¢ is a Toronto-based collective and event platform showcasing crip-identifying talent and prioritizing Sick, Crip, Mad and Disabled body-minds within safer and more accessible rave spaces. In practice, Crip raves start/end early, featuring a non-alcoholic hydration station, anti-inflammatory snacks, comfortable and varied seating options, a stretching area, adequate lighting, heating blankets, an accessible bathroom & entrance, security, and sober/easily identifiable party organizers. Revolution is written throughout the origins of electronic music, where the genres, sounds, and spaces of rave culture have been crafted through Q***r, Trans* and Black, Indigenous and People of Colour resistance. Informed by this legacy, CRIP RAVEā„¢ longs for the centring of Sick, Crip, Mad and Disabled folx within expressive electronic music spaces. Structural barriers, abelism, industry standards, and cultural norms have largely resulted in inaccessibility and the exclusion of Crip body-minds. Setting up an electronic music event so that all people can enter a venue is crucial, but accessibility requires us to go further— to centre disability in all aspects of planning so that people can feel safe, comfortable, and have their needs met once inside. CRIP RAVEā„¢ is created by two Q***rCrip organizers (Renee Dumaresque, Stefana Fratila) who are passionate about electronic music and envision a world where rave sites are accessible to everyone. This project hopes to be an ever-evolving series, as a work-in-progress that moves in tandem with community needs, feedback, and collaboration.
