Or we could agree to work at doing this NEVER and not just right now
Fear, uncertainty & discomfort are being assessed, assigned value then ranked
We compare & judge each other & ourselves trying to make sense of our suffering
I invite you to practice replacing this comparison by cultivating curiosity, compassion, empathy and validation towards yourself and others

STOP WEAPONIZING THERAPY/TREATMENT
"You should REALLY get therapy"
"Tell your therapist whatever you're working on is NOT working"
"Did you take your meds today?"
Whether intentional or unintentional seeing things like this Is invalidating and closes any potential supportive space
When we pathologize distressing emotions we minimize any allowance for true vulnerability...it just isn't safe

I packed up my office at the hospital Ive worked at for 9 years
🏳️‍🌈This is the last thing I'll take down when I leave
Not gonna lie, this is scary ANNND the most exciting thing!
Leaving something that is a sure thing for something that is uncertain
can be really scary. I put my tshirt on today for this reminder seems so fitting doesn't it? His story and his work is incredibly inspiring
It's okay to be scared, it's okay to say so, and also it's okay to ask for help

We are such a product based society
"You are only as good as ________" this pressure pulls us to only notice the outcomes we produce or don't produce
For example: "I need to get a good grade" the push is in the outcome BEFORE we've even starting studying
What could happen if you are just in this very moment, experiencing it, taking in all you can?
Is it possible that you could get things accomplished and do it mindfully and one at a time? And what does it mean about you if it's not ALL the things you "needed" to do
Signed,
a recovering over-functioner

This one is both for people seeking therapy and therapists..
🤍
People aren't broken
People are capable
🤍
People don't stay in suffering because it's fun or they're 'lazy'
People do the best with what they have & what they know sometimes that no longer works & sometimes that makes things worse
🤍
Therapy allows people space to observe & examine behaviour then decide what to do about it
🤍
Behaviour & patterns are learned & GUESS WHAT ...they can be unlearned!

No boundaries or limits in any relationship is a sabotage...a set up!
🤍
In hoping or wishing that people would just know your needs leaves to much space for resentment to develop
🤍
One of the best ways to maintain a relationship in the face of conflict or difficulty is well established boundaries

In DBT a “dialectic” refers to the idea of two truths being true simultaneously, even if they seem to oppose one another
We’re so used to seeing things as one-or-the-other and never as both-at-once
Consider the differences with EITHER-OR 🤍 BOTH-AND
EXAMPLE:
-Either you are right or you are wrong
-You are both right about some things and wrong about others
See how that works?
The binary of either-or is a lie that keeps us from the complexity of both-and and the joining of all the emotions that exist
GIVE THIS A TRY ...
Whenever you say BUT practice replacing it with AND and notice what you experience in the grey
I am nervous AND excited for you all to try this!
If you know any DBT therapists we really like to emphasize our AND!!

Did you ever learn how to say no effectively? I didn't!
Saying NO can feel really difficult especially given the proximity of the relationship of the 'asker'
We are inclined to say yes when we mean no if we want to avoid conflict and/or want people to like us more
Unfortunately, this leads to a sacrifice of ourselves and often generates negative feelings towards others and ourselves (AKA resentment)
Consider the use of NO as a tool in your ability to reinforce your limits

Few steps to think about if you're new to this or if you want to get better at it:
1.Evaluate the ask
2.Evaluate your capacity and desire/willingness
3. Say no if you mean no
4. Don't problem solve if it is not your problem you don't have to take on an alternative solution because you declined
5. Practice, practice and practice some more say the words out loud or in a mirror to get comfortable hearing them in your voice

Emotions are biological they occur in our brains. Our limbic system & ANS (autonomic nervous system) help us process those emotions and FEEL them in our bodies that's why we call them FEELINGS!
Emotions have a START, MIDDLE & an END
Do you know what shame feels like?
What about frustration? How about Joy? We feel throughout our bodies
Distressing and difficult emotions are HARD to feel AND stick with. So we do all sorts of things to avoid and ignore. We busy ourselves, we distract with work, alcohol, drugs, s*x, conflicts, shopping, fixing and planning and problem solving everything or we simply zone out. We are in the most distracted mindless times
When emotions cannot be felt through to the end they linger. They linger in our bodies and create illness.
Allow your emotions to be felt all the way through to the end of their cycle

THERAPIST THOUGHTS: growth rarely feels great, in the beginning
Acknowledging and shifting old patterns is hard work
You have the ability and you are so worth the process. Stay with it

What's the difference between fear and anxiety?
Fear is an immediate biological adaptive response meant to keep us alive
Anxiety is a fear response with the addition of planning...stay with me
Our brains are the most advanced of the mammal brains. Our prefrontal cortex helps with planning organizing and problem solving
Anxiety happens when fear occurs in response to our planning and not to an immediate "threat"
This looks like "what if's..." & "should'ves/could'ves"
You wouldn't have anxiety if you fell from a ladder you would have a fear in the momentyou fall, anxiety would occur if you worried about falling AGAIN (👈🏼See the planning? again would mean in the future!)
The only place anxiety CANNOT exist is in the moment, this very moment.
The good news is that our brains are capable of unlearning fear based responses
The first task in managing anxiety is understanding what it is and how your body responds. Both anxiety and fear responses are normal and needed
If you have any questions or I can be of any help get in touch with me!

Therapist thoughts:
Healing is hard
Healing is messy
Sometimes our perception that healing will be this freeing experiencr can blind us from the reality that the discomfort of the healing process has stopped the healing
🤍
Healing IS hard AND you are worth the effort
