Last first day of school with the roomies🫶🏼

I can’t begin to express how excited I am to be back in the classroom! I truly love learning…. especially in this program. I’ve learned so much so far about science and health, about the history of Naturopathic medicine, about symptoms and treatments and diagnosis.
But I’ve also learned so much more.

The ND program has been a discovery journey for me. I’ve learned so much more about myself than I ever expected. I’ve dedicated more time than ever before so intimately getting to know myself. It’s not easy to spend time with yourself. Sitting in uncomfortable silences. Being present in your own mind. I’ve spent countless hours of my time reflecting on what being happy, healthy and well means to me.

I hope that this year, I continue to grow and expand my knowledge in all aspects. My goal is to come out of this program being able to GENUINELY connect with my patients; to create a space where they feel safe and heard; to empathize with them; to share in the reality of hurt, pain, hope and most importantly, the journey towards wellness.

Here’s to another year of having to PRIVILEGE to go to school, learn and become better📚❤️

MAGNESIUM!

Swipe through to read about sources and functions of magnesium and some conditions in which magnesium can help benefit!

I personally have been using magnesium bisglycinate (one of several forms) for several years now to help with digestive issues as well as stress and sleep quality. I generally take 400mg and increase/decrease as needed and have found significant benefits for my personal concerns.

If you think you could benefit from magnesium, talk to a registered healthcare provider to explore your options!

Prep for the OSCE exam with me! 🩺🩻🔬

The OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) assesses aspects of clinical judgement, including diagnosis, treatment planning, prognosis, treatment methods, and clinical decision making.
OSCE I (the first of 3) is designed to assess the demonstration of knowledge, behaviors and skills necessary to conduct a problem-oriented physical examination (PE) in a simulated clinical encounter.

Our OSCE exam is scheduled for next Monday. We'll be presented a case and will have to perform appropriate physical examinations based on the patient presentation.

T-7 days!!!🤞

My truth about the gym:

I hate the gym. I always have. I lack self-confidence and am a serious perfectionist and so I hate the idea of someone watching me do an exercise imperfectly, or messing up and looking stupid.

BUT, I can honestly say that I feel so much better after going.

❗️Cognitively, I feel more alert and have less brain fog. In a 2014 article from the Harvard Health Letter, it mentions that regular aerobic exercise appears to boost the size of the hippocampus which is the brain area involved in verbal memory and learning (1).

❗️Mentally, I feel not only more confident after exercise, but also more positive and tenacious. Physical activity has been shown to boost brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF), which is thought to be reduced in depressed patients (2).

❗️Physically, well, you’ve heard about that!

For the past 2 months, I really let my physical activity slip and I feel worse as a result of it. I feel sluggish, tired and stagnant.
But the good part is, you can always get back on the horse💪🏼 Here’s to starting fresh for not only myself, but also my future patients- to practice what I will one day preach!

Even if it’s just a quick walk around the block, here’s your sign to give back to your body and get moving today❤️💪🏼

I could NOT survive exams without my Cognitive Recharge supplement from InspireHealth Niagara!

This formula from Dr. Groves contains Ashwagandha, GABA, Theanine, Phosphatidylserine and Relora. These are amino acids, adaptogens, phospholipids and neurotransmitters that help combat brain fog and fatigue as well as managing a healthy physiological stress response.

I’m showing some major appreciation for these today as I’m 3/7 exams through my exam season!

We’re going to dive deep today... What are adaptive/maladaptive behaviors?

I want to acknowledge that I’m not a professional in this area, but I am learning, and I want to share some takeaways from my health psychology class, as it was a very powerful one. Today we talked about the environments in which we grow up and how that affects the people that we become and the habits and behaviors that we develop. Everything is rooted in the way we have learned to cope.

Perhaps some of those behaviors mentioned in the image look familiar to you. How does it make you feel to acknowledge that? Do you feel angry? Disappointed? In denial?

Maybe you grew up in an environment that required you to bury your feelings and emotions... that might lead you to engage in behaviors of avoidance or running away.

Perhaps you grew up in a house where mom and dad were always too busy to notice you... this might be why you engage in risky behaviors, to get that high and that attention that you didn’t get when you were younger.

Maybe you lost someone close to you, or your parents divorced, your best friend moved halfway across the world, and feel like you have no control over your life. Self-harm might cause you to feel pain that you have full control over.

We don’t develop maladaptive behaviors for no reason. There are almost always subconscious reasons to why we do the things that we do. Being self aware is so powerful to understand the person that you are. Take some time today to reflect on some of the ways that you respond to situations. Think about the environment that you grew up in. There are reasons for these things.

Try to blame yourself less and seek to understand. Counselling or talking to professionals can be a great way to self-discover in a safe space.

Most importantly, hold space for self-compassion. You are doing the very best that you can❤️
