Imagine that you're lying on an table for when you’re asked you to count backwards from ten. What happens next is out of your control—and that’s a scary thought for most. What you may not know is that throughout the procedure, your anesthesiologist’s sole focus is keeping you safe through any kind of life-threatening event.

As your surgeons operate to improve your long-term health, this physician will continuously keep you under and pain-free, while monitoring and controlling your vital functions. They are trained to respond to any kind of distress your body experiences within seconds and resuscitate you if needed. As we mark National Volunteer Week (April 19–25), the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (CAS) extends our sincere thanks to the dedicated volunteer leaders who power our community.

From the Board of Directors and Section Executives to the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia Editorial Board and numerous committees, your contributions are essential to advancing our mission. We also recognize the invaluable support of volunteers with our affiliated foundations, CARF and CASIEF, whose work strengthens anesthesiology research and global health initiatives.

This year’s theme, “Ignite Volunteerism,” highlights the importance of elevating civic engagement and celebrating the impact of volunteers. At CAS, so many of our programs—webinars, CPD modules, journal publications, and Annual Meeting programming—are made possible by members who generously give their time and expertise.

Thank you for your leadership, commitment, and the meaningful impact you continue to make across our profession.
