🦴 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗲 — 𝗔 𝗪𝗮𝗸𝗲-𝗨𝗽 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲
A new scientific review shows microplastics, and even nanoplastics have been detected deep inside human bone and bone marrow. These particles can disrupt bone-building cells, accelerate aging, and may even contribute to conditions like osteoporosis.

This confirms what many of us in sustainability already know:
𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 — 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲.

Healthcare is a major source of single-use plastics, including the millions of plastic vials used every year.

Did you know that 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝟲𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼- 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀, according to a study published in NEJM? Patients with these plastic particles were about 𝟰.𝟱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 to experience a heart attack, stroke, or death within the next three years. The findings are even more striking for stroke patients, who had 𝟱𝟭 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 in their artery plaques compared to healthy tissues. Even those without symptoms but with plaque had 16 times more plastics. While more research is needed to understand causality, these results highlight a concerning link between environmental microplastics and cardiovascular risk.

Pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals generate tons of waste daily, from vials and blister packs to masks, gloves, syringes, and PPE.

All of these are designed for single use, yet lasting for centuries and shedding micro-plastics everywhere.

If we change nothing, nothing will change. It's time to re-think how we provide healthcare!

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 — they came from painted caps that flake during bottling.

At Lake 378 in Ontario, scientists are conducting a world-first experiment, intentionally introducing microplastics into a controlled lake environment to track how they move through ecosystems.
Early findings show that 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘀, not just legacy pollution drive the greatest harm.

This research offers valuable lessons for policy, product design, and industries like healthcare, where single-use plastics are still the norm.
