🕸️ Can fascia carry surface tension? 🕸️
⠀
Fascia plays a huge role in your horse’s health and biomechanics — and there is question of whether it can also carry trauma. Personally, I think it can and does.
In both humans and horses, fascia is a hydrated connective tissue designed to glide and move.
⠀
When it becomes sticky or restricted, surface tension can occur. During palpation, this might look like twitching, spasms, flinching, or general tightness. These reactions tell a story. Tension can also travel through the body, which is why neuro-myofascial release can be so effective.
⠀
Take girthing as an example: discomfort may be linked to gut health, tack fit, muscle soreness/tension or even past negative experiences. Over time, this can create a fascial reaction to the process even if the original issue is resolved.
⠀
💡 Tip: Before tacking up, spend a little extra time grooming or try gentle releases (like sternal lifts or light massage) to help release the superficial fascia and improve comfort. This is also a great way to bond with your horse and build a positive experience.
