Hypertension Canada was pleased to have two co-authors of our 2025 Primary Care Guideline, Kristin Terenzi and Greg Hundemer, present at the CFPC Family Medicine Forum in Winnipeg earlier this month.

Family physicians are key partners in improving hypertension detection and management, and the session focused on practical, evidence-based recommendations for primary care teams across Canada.

If you missed the presentation, you can watch it on demand. Simply visit fmf.cfpc.ca and select “register now” on the home page. On-demand access is currently the only registration option, making it easy to navigate and view the session.

The Primary Care Guideline offers a clear, stepwise approach to hypertension treatment:
1. Begin with low-dose combination therapy (ideally single-pill).
2. Add a third class if BP remains above target.
3. Add spironolactone or refer if still uncontrolled.
Preferred first-line combination: Irbesartan + HCTZ.

Accurate measurement matters.

The Primary Care Guideline recommends standardized, automated BP measurement and out-of-office confirmation for accurate diagnosis. Hypertension is defined as ≥130/80 mm Hg when measured with a validated device under optimal conditions.
