October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. There is a lot of confusion over what dyslexia actually is. An important fact to know is that people who have dyslexia can learn to read, and become amazing adults. I am attaching an article from a reliable source, which answers a number of questions. Please reach out if you have concerns about your or your child's literacy.

Dyslexia is described as an unexpected difficulty learning to read. Children with dyslexia may struggle with learning to read and write.

As the school year winds down, parents have an opportunity to help kids keep up with their language and literacy skills through the summer - read to them, have them pick out books from the library, have them read to you, look at pictures, talk about what you see, describe scenes in the park or on a trip, teach them new words, read signs... so many great opportunities to talk and listen to kids. I'd love to know some cute things your kids said to you recently - post in the comments. Wishing you a wonderful, safe, and healthy summer!

One of the best things we can do for our children (at home or in the classroom) is to help build oral language skills. These oral skills are linked to academic success, and to being able to describe and retell things that have happened or are imagined. I am linking to an article about how to help kids build their narrative language skills - check it out!

If there was one skill that could positively impact many other areas such as reading, writing, and social development, wouldn’t you want to teach it? Could oral storytelling be the key?

Wow! The summer is speeding by. I found a great list of books to help build social-emotional skills - self-control/impulse control. Lots of great options - check it out! Would love to hear which ones you have read, or if you have others you would recommend.

Self control is an important skill to teach children. One of my favorite ways to introduce new social emotional learning topics like impulse control or self-discipline to kids is through bibliotherapy, or reading books in counseling sessions with kids. I work with elementary aged children these days...

As the school year ends, and kids are spending more time at home, I thought I'd share some great ideas of what to do with them. The title: Games My Kids Beg Me To Play, caught my eye and my imagination. Would love to hear what you think!

This is my kind of silliness. These family games are creative, simple, and spontaneous. They need almost no preparation and only minimal equipment, just household stuff. They are unplugged, screen-free, non-board games that un-bore children, and they are all about playing rather than producing somet...

Wordle is the hottest new game in town! And how we solve the word has commonalities with how we should teach reading and writing. Check it out, and let me know if these tips help you play Wordle (or help your child learn to read and spell).

It’s hard to miss the meteoric rise of the Wordle craze. This game is not only a gift for lexophiles but also for educators. It reminds us that effective phonics and spelling instruction requires carefully designed, explicit teaching combined with volume reading, vocabulary building, and high leve...
