With the weather starting to warm up, we are all getting outdoors more and sometimes that means stroller naps for our little ones. When this happens many of us try to create a cool, dark sleep space for them by placing a light blanket on top of the stroller. While this is done with the best of intentions it can cause your little one to overheat. According to a study done by researchers in Sweden, draping even the thinnest of blankets (muslin swaddle) over your stroller can create sauna like heat inside, reducing air circulation and putting kids at risk of heat stroke, dehydration, heat exhaustion and even SIDS. In this study they found that without a cover, the temperature inside a stroller on a warm day was 72 ℉, but after being covered with a thin blanket it reached 93 ℉ within 30 minutes and almost 100 ℉ within an hour. Young children’s bodies can also heat up three to five times faster than adults because they don’t sweat as much.⁣ ⁣

Here are a few solutions for keeping your stroller cool and allowing you baby to nap in it comfortably;⁣
⁣
💤Ideally when choosing a stroller opt for a model with a large canopy.⁣
💤Select a mesh or perforated sun shield for your specific stroller that has been safety approved.⁣
💤Dress your little one in lightweight clothing.⁣
💤Try to stick to the shade as much as possible.⁣
💤Avoid outdoor walks during the sun’s strongest hours.⁣
💤Use a small stroller fan to help with air circulation. ⁣

I don’t know about you, but by the time bedtime for my kids rolls around I am exhausted! I want nothing more than for bedtime to go smoothly and for them to fall asleep quickly.

Carrying the mental load of bedtime can be a major source of anxiety for a lot of parents. Whether you’re dealing with a toddler who needs to be read all the books, a baby that is super fussy, you’re attempting to put multiple kids to bed or you’re busy second guessing yourself, it can be mentally and physically exhausting.

I created this image, so that if you are feeling this way at bedtime each night you know that you’re not alone. Depending on the age of your child it can be really helpful to set loving boundaries to help make bedtime go smoother. Also, taking turns with your partner can be beneficial too. As always, I am here to support you, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if bedtime is stressful in your household.

Does bedtime cause you a lot of anxiety? What bedtime thoughts would you add to this image?

With spring finally here, that also means that allergy season has arrived. It can be extremely difficult to sleep with nasal congestion and itchy, watery eyes, but the following tips can make achieving a good night’s rest a bit easier during allergy season.

🌷Wash your sheets weekly: To keep your keep sheets relatively free from the dust and pollen it’s recommended that you wash them weekly using the hottest water possible.
🌷Keep your doors and windows closed: This will help keep the pollen and other allergens from getting inside your house.
🌷Clean your house frequently: Household dust, pet hair and dander, and allergens tracked in from outside can contribute to allergies, so it’s important to vacuum and dust frequently.
🌷Use hypoallergenic bedding: Hypoallergenic bedding uses technologically advanced fabrics that stop the pollen, dust, and dirt from creeping into your mattress, resulting in less nighttime irritation.
🌷Shower at night: By the end of the day your hair, skin, and clothes are covered in an invisible layer of pollen and dust from time spent outside, so it’s best to shower an hour or two before bed and to wear a fresh, clean pair of pyjamas.
🌷Use a dehumidifier: Keep the humidity in your home at less than 50 percent with a dehumidifier or air conditioner, because dust mites can survive all year in a warm and humid home.

A few other helpful tips are to take your allergy medication at night, use an air purifier in your bedroom and to keep pets out of your bedroom.

4 things I would never do as a pediatric sleep consultant:

1️⃣ YOU CANNOT SPOIL A NEWBORN! Enough said 😊.

2️⃣ Life happens and no one wants to be bound by their child’s sleep schedule 100% of the time. Embrace the 80/20 rule and accept that sleep will be a bit out of the norm 20% of the time, but 80% of the time it will be business as usual.

3️⃣ We want our kids to associate positive feelings with bedtime, naptime and sleep in general, so it’s important to stay away from using sleep as a punishment. Bed and sleep should be associated with calmness, relaxation and happy thoughts.

4️⃣ You are allowed to take care of yours and your families wants and needs without feeling guilty. Setting boundaries with your loved ones around sleep may look like, “Hudson will be eating dinner a bit earlier today because we will be putting him to bed at 7:30 tonight”. “I understand that Dylan may not look tired to you, but he naps at this time each day. You can play with him when he wakes up”.

What are your non-negotiables around sleep?

Darkness is essential to a good night’s sleep, but sometimes getting our sleep environment to be of optimal darkness can be a challenge. Below are some helpful tips for creating a restful sleep environment.

🪟Cover the windows: Black out blinds, tinfoil or garbage bags and tape will do the trick.
🚪Block light from entering under the door: Turn off hallways lights, use a rolled up towel, door draft stopper.
😴Wear a sleep mask: This is for us parents who are unable to or may not want to make our rooms pitch black.
💡Dim the lights before bed: Research has shown that “being in a fully lit room prior to going to sleep results in delayed and shortened production of melatonin compared to dim lighting” (Sleep Foundation).
📱Put away/turn off all screens: The blue light that screens emit suppresses melatonin (the sleep hormone), so it’s best to be screen free for at least an hour before bedtime.
🩹Cover any additional sources of light: Think lights from a baby camera, humidifier, sound machine, digital clock, baby monitor, etc. Tape, bandaids, light blocking stickers or turning the object around (digital clock, baby monitor) are helpful to block light from these sources.

Are there any additional light sources in your sleep environment that have impacted your sleep?

In true Canadian fashion, spring has arrived and with it comes a mix of snow, rain and sun. Figuring out how to dress our kids (and ourselves) each morning for this weather can be exhausting in itself 😜, but let’s face it, as parents we often feel tired. This is why it is so important that we remember to look after ourselves too.

Be sure to prioritize yourself and make time to rest and rejuvenate. Here are some suggestions for spending your “me time” during the spring months.
