This Black History Month, we’re celebrating the contributions of Black Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) across Ontario. Their skill, leadership, and commitment to care play an essential role in supporting our healthcare system and the communities they serve.

We’re also highlighting the importance of culturally competent care. Our Cultural Competence Toolkit, available on our website, is a practical resource nurses can use to reflect on their practice, identify bias, and strengthen care for diverse communities.

Join us in recognizing Black nurses—past, present, and future-- for the many contributions they make to patient centred care.

On Thursday, our CEO, Dianne Martin, attended the Ministry of Finance budget consultation as part of WeRPN’s ongoing advocacy to strengthen nurse retention, reduce burnout, and improve patient care.

In just the past two weeks, WeRPN has also made a pre-budget submission, addressed the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs, and participated in pre-budget discussions with MPP Dr. Adil Shamji—advocating for permanent funding for nursing education programs (BEGIN and NEI), nurse-to-patient ratios, and fair, harmonized wages for RPNs.

This work is only possible because of the continued support and engagement of Registered Practical Nurses and WeRPN members. Together, our collective voice drives meaningful progress for the profession. We invite RPNs to join WeRPN and stand with us as we continue working toward fair compensation, safe working conditions, and the recognition RPNs deserve.

WeRPN joins nurses around the world in mourning the loss of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse who was killed over the weekend while trying to help someone else get out of harm’s way.

Alex’s commitment to care was so deeply ingrained that it ultimately cost him his life. A commitment so strong that his final words were, “Are you okay?”

We honor his compassion, courage, and unwavering dedication to others.

We extend our thanks to the MPPs on the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs for taking the time today to hear from our CEO, Dianne Martin, on supporting RPNs, strengthening nurse retention, and building a sustainable, robust health-care system.

WeRPN is proud to administer the BEGIN and NEI programs, which support career progression from PSW to RPN, RPN to RN, and ongoing professional development. Permanently funding these proven initiatives is essential to retaining and growing a strong nursing workforce.

Equally important are system-level reforms. We urge the government to legislate safe, evidence-based nurse-to-patient ratios and address persistent wage gaps by harmonizing RPN compensation across sectors. Together, these actions will reduce burnout, improve patient outcomes, and ensure Ontarians have access to timely, high-quality care—where and when they need it.
