Relationships are hard.
People often don't know what to say and say things just to please others. But when you stand firm in your skin with your feet on the ground, how you respond will make a difference.

Learn to say "no".
Learn to listen within.
Learn to take in complaints and criticism non-defensively.
Learn empathy.

All these will make relationships easier.

Emotionally secure people are confident and comfortable in their own skin. But it takes work to get there. Dr. Cortney Warren, a Harvard psychologist and bestselling author, reveals the phrases that the most emotionally stable people say every day.

A dysregulated parent can never regulate a dysregulated child.
A parent who has a child who is in a tantrum gets activated. We all do. If you match your child’s energy, then you are both deactivated and that will do nothing to help your child or get you to understand what is going on. Watch the video to see how to do it differently.

Connect to Disconnect
People have a tendency to shut down and stonewall when feelings get high. Walking away from someone or ‘giving them the cold shoulder’ ruptures the connection of the relationship. We all get activated. Why not try and tell the person “I am too activated now to continue this conversation and I don’t want to say something I might regret. I need some time away to calm down’? Remember – it has to come with a promise to return. If you are having trouble calming down, go back and say, ‘I’m still not ready, I need another half hour.’ But make sure to return.

All Behaviour is Motivated.
People have a tendency to focus on the behaviour at hand. Instead, why don’t you try looking and understanding what drives this behaviour?

Especially when raising children, we tend to focus on the ‘bad’ behaviour instead of delving into what is motivating that behaviour. In order to get a better sense of your child, (or it could be a friend or partner, or parent) this information will be extremely important as you go through the years.
