🇺🇦 PHSA statement on the invasion of Ukraine
March 2, 2022 - Over the past week, our executive team has watched the invasion of Ukraine alongside the rest of the world in horror and outrage.
While we support the diplomatic efforts currently taking place to end Putin’s invasion of Ukraine – we are keenly aware that more support is needed not just in Ukraine but for those with personal ties to either side of this conflict. We are collectively witnessing horrific events – largely impacting Ukrainian and Russian civilians who do not condone the actions of an autocrat.
As we have learned during the pandemic public health is political, and using your platform to amplify the voices of those suppressed and marginalized by the systems we (humans) have created is our duty as public health professionals. It is important to acknowledge the racism present in the coverage of the Ukraine conflict and media silence when it comes to other conflicts such those occurring in Palestine, Yemen, and Ethiopia. This does not detract from the crisis in Ukraine, it holds global aid efforts in the midst of any conflict to the same standard as we are seeing today for Ukraine.
We want to let not just DLSPH graduate students, but all graduate students know: it is okay to not be okay right now.
We are collectively trying to live in a pandemic while watching a dystopian war unfold in Ukraine.
In addition to the mental health subsidy for racialized students – we will also subsidize mental health support for any PHS students who need it as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.
