Clean environments are critical to effective Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC). Proper training for Housekeeping and Environmental Services teams is essential to breaking the chain of transmission and keeping patients, residents, staff, and visitors safe.

Effective education equips Environmental Services staff with the knowledge and skills they need, including:
1. Correct cleaning procedures
2. Proper disinfectant use
3. Appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment

When Environmental Services staff are well-trained, they’re key partners in patient safety and quality care. Investing in their education is investing in safer healthcare environments for everyone.

Earlier this month, the Ontario government announced an additional $26 million investment to train and upskill frontline staff in long-term care, focused on strengthening the workforce where it matters most.

This funding is intended to support:
• Training for new and existing frontline staff
• Professional development and career advancement
• On-the-job, workplace-based learning models
• Building internal capacity within long-term care homes

As Ontario invests in developing and retaining a skilled long-term care workforce, IPAC and housekeeping education and training is a critical part of that solution - translating into safer care environments for residents, families, and staff.

Practice Health Check is here to support all long-term care staff with comprehensive IPAC and housekeeping services on-site education and training sessions. Contact us for more information – info@practicehealthcheck.ca

Recent IPAC lapses reported across medical facilities highlight serious risks to patient safety, including inadequate instrument reprocessing, failure to properly clean, disinfect, and sterilize reusable medical devices, and the use of unsterile needles with multidose vials. These gaps can lead to cross-contamination and potential exposure to blood-borne viruses.

Facilities such as walk-in clinics, physician and primary care practices, community surgical and diagnostic centres, Independent Health Facilities, transitional care centres, audiology and hearing clinics, and optometry practices are all impacted. Following Manufacturer’s Instructions for Use, proper disassembly of instruments, use of autoclaves, adherence to Medical Device Reprocessing CSA Z314 standard and PIDAC Best Practices, proper use of multidose vials, safe preparation and use of syringes, and having documented IPAC policies and procedures are just some of the essential IPAC practices required to reduce infection risks.

Regulatory standards and IPAC best practices exist to protect patients and staff, prevent disease transmission, and ensure safe, high-quality care across all healthcare settings. Too often, facilities believe they are compliant with these requirements when gaps still exist.

Regular, independent IPAC reviews help identify gaps and ensure your facility meets the highest standards.

Long-term care homes don’t have to navigate compliance and infection prevention alone.

An external partner can help validate your housekeeping and IPAC practices, assist with meeting Ministry requirements, and provide outbreak management support when it matters most.

We also offer tailored training for new IPAC Leads and housekeeping staff to help strengthen your IPAC program from the ground up.

Beautiful results start with safe practices and environments. In medical aesthetics, Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) isn’t just a standard, it’s the foundation of every treatment.

From injectables to skin procedures, proper IPAC protects clients, practitioners, and the quality of your results.

That means:
• Diligent hand hygiene
• Proper sterilization of instruments and devices
• Safe injection techniques
• Clean, disinfected, and well-maintained treatment spaces and surfaces
• Evidence-based protocols for every service

When IPAC is done right, we reduce infection risks, support patient confidence, and elevate the entire client experience.

Because great aesthetics should always go hand-in-hand with IPAC.

AMR Awareness Week: Infection Prevention & Control Starts With Us

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) isn’t just a future threat, it's already impacting the way we prevent and treat infections. One of our strongest tools in the fight against AMR is effective Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC).

Every hand washed, surface cleaned and disinfected, PPE correctly used, and infection safely contained reduces the need for antibiotics and that helps slow the rise of resistant bacteria.

Strong IPAC = fewer infections = less antibiotic use = less resistance.

This AMR Awareness Week, let’s commit to:
• Practicing good hand hygiene
• Following proper cleaning and disinfection routines
• Using antibiotics only when truly necessary
• Supporting evidence-based IPAC practices in our organizations and communities

Together, we can protect patients and clients, preserve antibiotics, and build a healthier future.
