Feb 1-7 is Eating Disorder Awareness Week in Canada. Swipe through for some eating disorder facts & stats ➡️

Over the last year and a bit, I’ve had the privilege of supporting folks with eating disorders. Each client’s story is different, and I’ve learned so much hearing each of their insights. It’s amazing to witness client’s healing journeys as they recover from their eating disorder and make peace with food and eating.

There has a lot more dietitians, like me joining this field lately. But outside of the field, eating disorders are still so misunderstood. The lines can be so blurred between dieting and “eating healthy”, and the point where it becomes disordered.

If you are struggling with your eating or relationship to food, whether you meet the criteria for an eating disorder or not, you deserve support ❤️

Finding the time and motivation for movement is hard for me in the winter, anyone else!?

This makes it a great time to re-centre on ways to make it more joyful.

Here are some ideas:

✨ Walks outside - movement doesn't have to be in the gym or a structured at-home workout class.
✨ Try something new - a winter activity like skating or cross country skiing perhaps?
✨ Find what you enjoy - actually enjoying it means you're more likely to build it into your routine.
✨ Focus on how it FEELS - move mindfully.
✨ Uncouple movement from weight loss - this is easier said than done, but changing your body isn't a good long-term motivator for movement. And there's a good chance that it will lead to you hating movement.
✨ Rest when you need to - honour when the right choice for you is to rest instead.

What's been your favourite way to move these days?

Hello again!!! 👋

It’s been a while, but I am so happy to be back!

Here’s some things I’ve been up to over the last few months:
• Started a new job in a mental health clinic
• Supported some amazing clients in my practice to improve their relationship to food
• Onboarded 2 talented nutrition student volunteers (you’ll be meeting them on here soon!!)
• Went on a couple of trips within the country - it’s been nice to see more of Canada
• Worked on finding balance, taking time for rest, and being gentle with myself through these (still!!) pandemic times

What’s new with you?!!

Is it just me, or does it seem like everyone and their dog has an opinion on how you should eat these days?!

Remember that simply being a person who eats doesn’t qualify someone to give you nutrition advice. And NEVER does anything qualify someone to give you unsolicited nutrition advice.

Just because something “worked” for someone else doesn’t mean it will work for you. Be weary of how someone defines “works” as well.

You have complete permission to say no, set boundaries, change the subject, keep your eyes on your own plate. Always. 💗

As the weather is getting warmer and the COVID vaccinations are ramping up, here’s an important reminder...

Your body is ready for summer. Your body is ready for the world to re-open.

Your body is GOOD. Just the way that it is right now.

If you’re feeling stress and discomfort around your body these days, know you are not alone. It’s so common for summer clothing and the thought of seeing more people soon to bring out these feelings for folks.

If you’ve been feeling this way, ask yourself- how can you add more self compassion? What would you say to a friend struggling with their relationship to their body? How can you speak kindly to it?

Can you do something that makes your body feel good? Maybe a warm bath or some gentle movement.

Could you write down 3 things you feel grateful for about your body? It could be as simple as legs for walking, and arms for hugging.

Contrary to popular belief, nothing good happens without self-compassion ❤️

WHY do you move?

A game changer in my own relationship to movement, and for many clients that I’ve worked with, is to shift the focus from physical appearance to the many other things that movement brings us.

Better mood. More energy. Strength & flexibility. Better sleep.

Focusing on the here & now benefits with movement helps to tune into your body & make it more enjoyable. And when you actually enjoy it, it helps to build it more regularly into your routine.

They happen. Take a few deep breaths. Acknowledge how you’re feeling, and that it’s okay and normal that you feel this way in our body-obsessed world.

Food adds STRUCTURE.

When things feel chaotic (with eating or with life), eating is a great way to add in some regulation.

Breakfast ➡️ Snack ➡️ Lunch ➡️ Snack ➡️ Dinner. And repeat.

Prioritizing regular nourishment can help to add calm. It can be helpful to ground your routine around regular meals and snacks.

Have you ever thought about eating as a way to add routine & structure to your day? Let me know ⤵️

Improving your relationship to food takes TIME!

I think that often on social media, it can seem like improving your relationship to food is a quick & easy process. It’s hard to capture all the nuances and complexities of this really personal journey in IG posts.

But improving your relationship to food is definitely not a linear process!! Especially because many of the things we encounter on a day to day basis are counterintuitive to it. Like diet talk. Weight loss ads. Unsolicited body comments.

You are so brave for doing this work!!!

Keep eating. Set boundaries. Unfollow, mute & hide. Seek support if you need. Keep going. You got this ❤️

One of the subtle ways we can remain in a diet mindset is through focusing on control with eating.

Controlling your portions. Only allowing yourself to eat certain foods, meals or snacks. Having “self-control” by choosing only “good” foods.

When we make food choices from a place of self-control, it’s hard to have a healthy relationship to food.

Here’s a question for you to reflect on today: What would it look like if you were to shift that focus from self-control to self-care?

Journal it out. Talk about it with a loved one. Drop your thoughts below if you’d like ⤵️

I’ll start. Making food choices from a place of self-care today for me looks like taking time to step away from my computer and honour my hunger with breakfast, lunch and snacks.
