As October rolls in, it's a great time to get your garden ready for winter. Start by planting bulbs and cool-season crops, and don't forget to divide your perennials. Cleaning up the garden is also key—get rid of any dead or diseased plants and tidy up the beds. Enrich your soil with some compost and a layer of mulch. Keep harvesting those last summer crops and consider planting garlic, spring-flowering bulbs, trees, and shrubs. Adding compost or leaf mold to your beds now will give your soil a nice boost for the next season.
Eating from your own garden has many benefits. You'll enjoy fresher and healthier food, save money, and help the environment. Gardening is also a great way to get some physical exercise and reduce stress.
