A good reason to add vitamin D to your diet.

Vitamin D is extremely beneficial for disease prevention, including the flu. Unfortunately, many people worldwide are deficient due to insufficient sun exposure. This vitamin, formed when skin is exposed to sunlight, regulates over 2,000 genes, including those that bolster the immune system. A low Vitamin D level can weaken your immune response, making you more susceptible to the flu. Studies indicate that higher Vitamin D levels can reduce the risk of colds, flu, and respiratory infections.

Taking vitamin D every day can bring some pretty cool benefits. Your bones can get stronger, muscles and nerves might work better, and your immune system could get a boost to help fight off bacterial or viral infections. https://cherylmillett.com/healthy-fats/ #

How many times do we need to chew? There is not a number of chews as each food or kind of food (raw versus cooked carrots, whole apple vs apple juice) requires a different number of chews in order to break it down to liquid. This would stimulate the production of saliva so that the digestive process gets underway. Why chew the liquid (something other than water)? The mouth requires time to identify the foods in the mouth (so chew).

These days many more people consume food in liquid form, such as protein shakes and smoothies. Best to know the impact and difference between whole foods and whole food smoothies and juices, and what their differences are when it comes to digesting (for another time).

A balanced diet with 20-35% fat intake of your daily calories is recommended by many health professionals so where did the no fat diet come out of? Good question. Eat less fat and you will loose body fat or weight (think stress as the root cause.) You will yoyo from that recommendation. You need healthy fats.

Full circle to appreciate what role salvia has in our body. The saliva doesn’t stay in the mouth. It mixes with the food and the coated food mash begins its journey down the throat to the esophagus into the stomach. It is the second step to break down your food after you chew! In addition, it lubricates the food so it flow down with ease and grace.

The next time a spoonful of food finds its way into our mouth, let’s ‘sense our salvia‘. Appreciate its role and chew to your heart’s content, and your digestive system will love you as well as your entire body (self care).

Winter is here, how do we continue to walk safely and comfortably in winter weather?

Plan your route carefully by sticking to cleared and salted walkways, avoiding unmaintained shortcuts, and checking the weather forecast before heading out. Watch your step and avoid icy or wet areas, assuming all dark spots are slippery. Also be careful on painted crosswalks as the white paint is slippery

Use handrails on stairs and ramps, or spread your feet for balance if none are available. On slippery surfaces, take small, flat-footed steps, keep your knees bent and slightly pointed out, and lean forward to maintain balance.

Carry a small bag of sand, grit, or non-clumping cat litter to sprinkle on icy areas. Avoid distractions by putting your phone away while walking.

Stay aware of your surroundings, and if you fall, try to land on your buttocks or side, checking for injuries before getting up. If you need help crossing icy surfaces, ask a passerby for assistance.
