Common Types of Cancer in Dogs

Cancer can affect dogs in different ways depending on the type of cancer and where it develops in the body. Understanding some of the most common forms can help pet owners recognize warning signs earlier and seek veterinary care promptly.

In this post, we highlight several types of cancer commonly diagnosed in dogs.

Lymphoma

Lymphoma affects the lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system. It often causes enlarged lymph nodes and may be accompanied by weight loss, lethargy, or loss of appetite.

Mast Cell Tumours

These are among the most common skin tumors in dogs and often appear as lumps or bumps on the skin. Because they can resemble harmless growths, any new lump should always be evaluated by a veterinarian.

Osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma is an aggressive bone cancer that frequently affects large and giant breed dogs. It often develops in the legs and may cause limping, swelling, and pain during movement.

Hemangiosarcoma

This cancer develops in the cells lining blood vessels and commonly affects organs such as the spleen, liver, or heart. It can progress silently, which is why routine veterinary monitoring is important.

Mammary Tumours

Mammary Tumours occur in the mammary glands and are most commonly seen in unspayed female dogs. They often appear as lumps along the abdomen or near the ni***es and should be examined promptly.

Every cancer behaves differently and requires professional diagnosis and treatment planning. If you notice unusual symptoms such as lumps, swelling, changes in behavior, or unexplained illness, schedule a veterinary examination.

Early detection plays an important role in improving treatment options and supporting your dog’s quality of life.

Early Signs of Cancer in Dogs 💚🦮

Cancer is one of the leading health concerns affecting dogs, especially as they age. While hearing the word cancer can be frightening, recognizing the early warning signs can help ensure your dog receives prompt veterinary care and the best possible outcome.

Some symptoms may appear subtle at first, but paying attention to changes in your dog’s health or behavior can make a significant difference.

Early signs to watch for include:

• Lumps or bumps – Any new swelling or mass should be checked by a veterinarian.

• Unexplained weight loss – Sudden weight loss without diet changes may indicate underlying illness.

• Loss of appetite – A persistent decrease in interest in food may signal health problems.

• Persistent lethargy – Unusual tiredness or reduced activity can be a warning sign.

• Non-healing wounds – Cuts, sores, or skin lesions that do not heal should be evaluated.
• Difficulty breathing, eating, or swallowing – These symptoms may indicate problems affecting internal organs.

• Abnormal bleeding or discharge – Unusual bleeding from the nose, mouth, or other areas should always be investigated.

• Behavior changes or signs of pain – Dogs often hide discomfort, so subtle changes in behavior may indicate underlying health issues.

If you notice any of these symptoms, schedule a veterinary evaluation as soon as possible. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve your dog’s quality of life and long-term health.

At Wuff’s Canine Health Clinic, our goal is to provide education and awareness to help dog owners make informed decisions about their pet’s wellbeing.

Your dog’s oral health is not just about clean teeth or fresh breath, it is a critical component of their overall health and longevity.

The mouth is the gateway to the body. When plaque and tartar accumulate along the gumline, harmful bacteria can enter the bloodstream and contribute to systemic inflammation. Over time, this chronic inflammatory burden may affect major organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys, while also weakening immune function and digestion.

Unfortunately, dental disease is one of the most common yet overlooked health conditions in dogs. Studies show that over 80% of dogs develop periodontal disease by the age of three. Because the progression often occurs silently beneath the gumline, many guardians do not recognize the signs until the disease is advanced.

Maintaining good dental health in dogs helps to:

• Prevent oral infections
• Reduce chronic inflammation in the body
• Protect vital organs
• Support nutrient absorption and digestion
• Strengthen immune resilience
• Improve comfort, energy, and overall quality of life

A healthy mouth supports a healthy body and preventative care is one of the most powerful ways we can support our dogs’ long-term wellbeing.

Swipe through to learn:

• Why dental health matters
• How oral disease affects the entire body
• What every dog guardian should know about prevention

Because true wellness begins at the foundation. ✨

Our internationally virtual clinic will be opening soon accepting patients globally. Stay tuned in.

Study - https://www.mdpi.com/
2076-2615/16/2/217

Emerging research has examined associations between certain flea and tick dips and sprays (particularly organophosphates and carbamates) and increased bladder cancer risk. While this does not mean every product causes cancer, it reinforces an important principle: what goes on the skin can enter systemic circulation.

In integrative canine wellness, risk reduction is part of prevention. Ask questions. Read labels. Make informed choices.

Kennel cough in dogs 🐾

Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection that affects the upper airways of dogs. It is part of the Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) and commonly spreads in environments where dogs gather such as kennels, dog parks, grooming salons, and daycare facilities.

Dogs with kennel cough often develop a dry, persistent cough that may sound like honking or gagging. Other symptoms can include mild lethargy, nasal discharge, or decreased appetite.

It spreads through:

• airborne respiratory droplets
• direct dog-to-dog contact
• shared bowls, toys, or surfaces

While many cases are mild and resolve with rest and supportive care, puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with weakened immune systems may require closer monitoring.

Supporting your dog’s immune health, proper nutrition, and early veterinary guidance can help protect against complications and support recovery.

If your dog develops a persistent cough, consult your veterinarian for proper diagnosis and care.

OBESITY IS A DISEASE, not just “chubby.”

Excess fat is metabolically active, inflammatory tissue. It disrupts hormones, drives insulin resistance, strains joints and the heart, increases fatty liver risk, and can shorten lifespan. This is endocrine dysfunction, not just extra weight.

If your dog is not losing weight despite eating less, look deeper. Inaccurate measuring, metabolic adaptation, low protein intake, hypothyroidism, leptin resistance, and chronic inflammation can all block progress.

What works is precision. Weigh food in grams. Calculate RER correctly. Feed high protein with controlled fat. Use structured low impact exercise. Monitor every two to four weeks.

Weight loss is not about starving the body. It is about correcting metabolism.

Metabolic consultations will be available through Wuffs Canine Health Clinic soon.
