My Coastal Classroom Welcome to My Coastal Classroom.

I’m a second‑year ECE student, a wife, and a mom of three just trying to learn, stay caffeinated, and survive Nova Scotia weather.

Snowflakes are tiny science wonders just waiting to be explored through play ❄️

From their six-sided shapes to the fact that no two are ever the same, snowflakes offer endless opportunities for outdoor learning, nature play, and curious conversations. When children stop to catch a snowflake on a mitten, trace its pattern, or wonder how it formed, they’re engaging in meaningful learning, without even realizing it. 🤍

Exploring snowflakes through play helps children:
✨ Build early science and observation skills
✨ Notice patterns, symmetry, and differences
✨ Strengthen language through questions and storytelling
✨ Connect with nature in a hands-on, joyful way
✨ Develop curiosity about the world around them

Whether you’re heading outside for a winter walk, setting up a snowflake investigation tray, or simply pausing to look up as the snow falls, these small moments spark big learning. ❄️💙

Nature is one of the best teachers and winter is full of magic worth slowing down for.

Regulation is more than just having a basket of fidgets! Regulation happens in relationship, which means educators and caregivers have a valuable role to play in supporting children’s regulation each day, in how they interact with children and set up the learning environment. In this session, participants will define regulation and the factors that can influence it; identify how our relationships with children are a necessary part of regulation; and, investigate practices that can help support children’s regulation so they can play and learn. Facilitated by Gina Blan, Professional Learning Lead, Kids Included.

How Do You Feel Today? ❤️

This simple feelings activity helps kids recognize and express their emotions in a fun, hands-on way. By changing the bottle caps, children can show how they feel and start important conversations.

How to make it:
Draw a child on a piece of cardboard or thick paper, leaving space for the face. Draw several different emotions on bottle caps using a marker. Place the caps on the drawing so kids can move and choose the face that matches their feeling.

A powerful and easy activity to support emotional learning at home. Save this idea to try with your kids!
