When the seasons change it is natural to notice internal shifts as well. As the nights become longer and the days get colder you may notice changes in your energy levels and mood. Accepting these natural fluctuations can help alleviate some feelings of discomfort that sometimes come up around this time of year. A therapist can also support you as you navigate the change in seasons. Visit our website if you are interested in speaking with someone.

Practices to help embrace seasonal change:

• Having a daily ritual that feels calming or grounding
• Prioritizing rest
• Making sure to get some sunshine or fresh air each day, even for a few minutes
• Take notice of the moments, people and places that bring you joy or inspire gratitude

Trans day of remembrance is a day to honour and mourn members of the trans and gender non-conforming communities who have been lost to transphobic violence. This is also a time for cisgender allies to reflect on how they might contribute to the safety of their trans and gender non-conforming friends, family and neighbours. Anchored Psychological Services is proud to offer trans affirming therapy services.

The office will be closed on November 11th as we observe Remembrance Day and honour the lives lost fighting for the freedom of Canada. We are grateful for the past and present sacrifices made by those who choose to support our country through military service.

There are many different professionals who provide mental health support. Anchored Psychological Services employs a psychologist and two Registered Counselling Therapist Candidates (RCT-C)

So, what are the differences between these two professions?

Psychologists in Nova Scotia have masters or PHD level education and are registered with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology. Psychologists can assess for and diagnose psychological, behavioral and educational disorders. They can also provide consultation and therapy on an individual, group or institutional level. Many psychologists are specialized to work with certain conditions and populations. Psychologists are not able to prescribe pharmacological treatment.
Registered counselling therapists (RCTs) have a masters or PHD level education and are registered with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists.
Registered counselling therapists can offer individual, group, couple or family therapy to support people with their mental and emotional health. RCTs work in a range of different settings including hospitals, private practice, schools or rehabilitation facilities.
RCTs often use specific approaches that are suited for different client concerns. RCTs are not able to diagnose or prescribe pharmacological treatment.
Note on candidacy:
Registered Counselling Therapist Candidates
(RCT-Cs) are RCTs who have either recently received their license or transferred their credentials from another country or province. They have all the education and training to obtain their license but still need to complete the required number of clinical hours before being fully licensed.
RCT-Cs are required to complete these clinical hours while receiving supervision. This is to ensure that RCT-Cs are competent professionals and that they have adequate support as they begin their careers.
Some insurers may not cover services offered by RCT-Cs.

There are many reasons someone chooses to see a therapist. Here are a few ways that therapy might benefit you.

1. Personal Growth
Whether it’s forming new habits or improving communication skills, many people have ideas about the kind of person they want to be. A therapist can help you identify your values and work through stuck spots where it has been difficult to make changes on your own.

2. Change
Life brings many unexpected situations. Big changes in life can be stressful and difficult to navigate. A therapist could support you through life changes by helping you process your emotions and identify ways to build stability even when life feels unpredictable.

3. Emotional Regualtion
Have you ever felt overwhelmed or confused by how you feel or react? A therapist can help you make sense of your emotional experiences and show you tools to help with emotional regulation.

4. Stress Management
In today’s world there is no shortage of stressors. Learning to identify and manage the stress in your life can significantly improve your well-being.

5. Having Someone to Talk To
Therapy isn’t always about changing something or solving problems, sometimes it’s simply a space to relax and explore your thoughts, emotions and experiences with the empathy and understanding of a trained professional. Having a compassionate person to listen and hold space for the unique complexity of your life can be immensely beneficial.

Today is world Mental Health Day. Mental health is a crucial component of our well-being. Mental health involves thoughts, emotions and behaviors and has a big impact on how we relate to ourselves and others. Taking care of your mental health is equally as important as taking care of your physical health and similarly requires intention, practice and sometimes the help of trained professionals. Mental health professionals can support you by offering a space to explore your thoughts and emotions and help you process and recover from difficult experiences. They can also provide tools that you can use in your day-to-day life to strengthen your mental and emotional well-being.

If you’re interested in learning more about getting some support with your mental health, reach out to us through the contact form on our website. Our counselling therapist candidate Anni would be happy to schedule a free 15 minute consultation.

October is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) awareness month.

ADHD is a neuro-developmental condition characterized by a spectrum of different symptoms. These symptoms include difficulty regulating attention, differences in emotion expression and processing, hyperactivity or impulsivity, and differences in executive functioning. While some of the symptoms of ADHD can be limiting it is often the stigma, and misunderstanding that folks with ADHD find the most difficult to navigate. Education, support and access to medication or other treatments are vital to combating this stigma and helping people with ADHD live the lives they want.

Trained mental health professionals such as counselling therapists and psychologists can offer support with emotion regulation, impulse control and help folks understand their symptoms and experiences.

Our office will be closed today, September 30th to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today is an invitation to remember the lives lost and forever changed by the Canadian Residential school system. Today is also a chance to reflect on the progress that has been made and the change that still needs to happen. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) Calls to Action. These Calls to Action outline 94 actionable steps towards addressing the legacy of the Residential School system and working towards reconciliation. Unfortunately, the majority of these calls to action have yet to be realized, highlighting the need for continued effort towards change. You can visit the TRC’s website: https://nctr.ca to read the Calls to Action.
