And today we’re talking about paced bottle feeding! Most of us were raised with the idea that we had to hold a baby on their back, and pour the bottle into their mouth, being sure not to let any air into the ni**le of the bottle.
But we’re here to say ✋🏽 stop 🛑 thank you very much, and consider paced bottle feeding instead!
Paced feeding allows baby to be in charge of how much they are eating, rather than eating a set amount that we *think* they might need. This can help prevent a gassy tummy from guzzling too much milk or formula at once 👌🏼
How is it done?
First, hold baby in a more upright position. Then, hold the bottle horizontally, rather than tipping it downward into their mouth. Allow baby to drink, and pause, and give them real breaks with burps every 1/2 to 1 OZ of liquid (depending on their age and size!). This can help baby be in charge of how much they are eating, and prevents them from getting over full without even realizing it. This is especially important when you are swapping between the breast and the bottle, because it makes bottle feeding a little more work for baby- which can help keep them from developing a preference for the bottle.
