What do you think? Is it wise to reach for goals that are unattainable? Here is what a reach means for a dancer.

I worked as a pianist for ballet classes for many years. One of the best things I learned as I listened to hours and hours of dance instruction was about reaching. A brilliant teacher was speaking to a class one day about extending their arms in a reach. He lined them up and asked them to imagine th...

Music can connect people. Here's how it connected my husband and I one night. We had a fight that morning and things were teetering. You went back to work and I went back to whatever forgettable thing it was that I ended up doing. Later that evening we sat down to watch a show in separate chairs but...

Here are my thoughts on the connection between "the piano hand" and authenticity. Let me know how you see it in the comments!

Students of the piano are taught that there is a correct hand position for playing. Achieving this position is something that should be practised and worked on daily. The Piano Hand. Maybe you’ve seen it illustrated in a beginner piano series. The hand is curved in toward the palm with only the ti...

This is where I'll be posting some of my thoughts about how music has helped me make sense of the world.

I have been a musician since I was very small. I started playing piano on an upright that looked very much like the one in the painting below. It seems I will always be a musician. It's the way I see the world. I have taught piano and voice for many years and I am happy to help other people improve....

Stay sharp at work!

"Musical practise is a protective factor for the brain.
The anterior part of the corpus callosum of musicians is larger than that of non-musicians.
The central sulcus in both hemispheres of the brain is deeper for musicians.
The cerebellum is larger in musicians.
People who play instruments have more grey material in the primary and somatosensory motor, premotor, frontal parietal and inferior frontal gyrus areas."

Whenever I tell someone that I am a pianist, the response is almost always, "Oh I wish I played piano. I took lessons for a bit as a kid but then I quit. I wish I hadn't." Adult life makes it so difficult to come back. My program - Music that Works, helps to remove those logistical barriers that keep you from regularly recharging your health through music. How would life change for you if you learned to refresh through creative music making? Pablo Picasso is known to have said, "Inspiration exists but it has to find you working."
