Huge shoutout to Mike for sharing your expertise! I can’t wait to integrate what I learned into my treatments and help my patients move and feel better! 🏃🏼‍♀️

Deep Tissue Massage is a therapeutic massage technique focusing on deeper layers of muscle. Deep strokes and firm pressure are used to target and release chronic muscle tension and adhesions (knots) in the inner layers of muscles and connective tissue. Deep tissue massage is often used for chronic muscle pain or tightness, injuries, posture-related issues, sports recovery or scar tissue and adhesions from old injuries. Unlike relaxation focused massages, deep tissue massage is designed for therapeutic work on deeper tissues.

The trochanteric region of the hip contains three major bursae. These bursae work as shock absorbers and lubricants for the movement of the muscles adjacent to them.

Trochanteric bursitis typically has an insidious onset from overuse but may also be caused by a direct injury to the bursa.

Symptoms of trochanteric bursitis:
- Sharp or aching pain on the outer hip or thigh
- Pain that worsens with lying on the affected side, prolonged standing or walking, climbing stairs, getting out of the car or getting up from a chair
- Tenderness when pressing on the outer hip
- Pain may radiate down the side of the leg

Trochanteric bursitis is most often due to a combination of pelvic and muscle imbalances and repetitive hip motions that can occur in activities such as dancing, tennis and running.

Common Findings:
- Shortness of the hip adductors
- Lengthened and weak hip abductors
- In some cases there may be an elevated ilium and tightness of the iliotibial tract (IT band) on the same side as the bursitis

Acupuncture can be used to increase range of motion, decrease pain and reduce swelling of the inflamed bursae.

STATIC STRETCHING

- Static stretching involves stretching a muscle or muscle group close to its maximum range while maintaining and holding that position for a minimum of 30 seconds - Static stretches are held without movement
- Targets increased flexibility
- Typically used after workouts to cool down and aid recovery
- Useful in maintaining flexibility during the early recovery phase of exercise when muscle spasms may still be present form an injury

How are static stretches performed?
Slowly move into the stretched position until the point of maximum stretch without allowing muscle contraction

Examples of static stretches:
- To perform a static stretch of the hamstrings - Sit with legs extended, reach for your toes and hold.
- To perform a static stretch of the quads - Stand, grab your ankle behind you, pull it toward your glutes, and hold.
