One of my absolute favorite activities is forest walks with my family! Today we spent two hours out in the woods, building a “fairy house” and enjoying the peace and each other’s company. We found high-bush cranberry (cramp bark), dogwood, mountain ash, Solomon’s Seal, wild sarsaparilla, nettles, burdock, goldenrod, silverberry, and so much more! So thankful for all the trails and parkland around Edmonton and fantastic people to share it with ❤️❤️❤️

I’m not sure about growing aloe outside here, but all the rest of these lovely herbal allies grow wonderfully here in Edmonton’s zone 3-4a climate. They really are low maintenance, and a great addition to your home garden, for your health and for the pollinators! 🥰🌱

Hormonal migraines can be caused by drops from high to low estrogen that occur at ovulation, before your period, postpartum and in perimenopause. And are often worst in estrogen dominant women.

They can make you miserable and take days out of your life!

Fortunately, there are ways to reduce their frequency, need for medication & even prevent them!

In my women’s medical practice I include herbs & supplements with the best evidence. Some can stop a migraine but they’re most effective as prevention.

Give at least 12 weeks to see optimal benefits, so hang in there and use medication as a bridge if needed - just speak with your health care provider first.

My top 3 super ⭐️s for prevention:
🌿Riboflavin (vit B2): Has been shown to prevent recurrent migraines by 50%. Safe in pregnancy. Dose: 400 mg/day.

🌿Feverfew: Prevents migraines & reduces severity. 🚫if on blood thinners or pregnant. Dose: 25 mg daily.

🌿Butterbur (aka Petasites): Used preventatively to reduce migraine frequency. Dose: 50 to 75mg/2x daily. Only use products that say “PA-free”. 🚫if pregnant/BF’ng.

Supporting cast for prevention:
🌿Magnesium: helpful in preventing migraines associated with your period. Also shown to reduce migraine severity. Dose: 600mg/day. Safe if pregnant/BF’ng.

🌿Calcium: 500 mg/day has been shown to prevent and reduce PMS symptoms, including headaches, by half. Safe if pregnant/BF’ng.

🌿Vitex: Can lead to overall steadier estrogen levels & prevent menstrual migraines. Dose: 180 to 220 mg daily in capsule, once or twice daily, or 5 mL tincture daily. 🚫if pregnant/exclusively BF’ing.

Both for prevention & resolution:
🌿Ginger: 250 mg has been shown to reduce the severity of attacks within two hours equal to medication with less side effects! Dose: up to 2 g/day. Safe if pregnant and BF’ing.

🌿Curcumin: Anti-inflammatory effects and pain relief. Dose: 500mg/2x daily, but preparation may vary, so follow the dose on the package. 🚫if pregnant.

The nettles are out - and a great food for you and your garden! 🌱

The strongest fertilizer and insecticide found in nature (easy to make).
Understanding Nettle Macerate:
Nettle macerate is derived from the maceration of nettles, which involves soaking the plant in water to extract its beneficial components.
This solution is rich in essential nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, calcium, and iron, which are vital for plant health and growth.
Preparation of Nettle Macerate:
Collection: Gather a substantial quantity of nettles using gloves to protect from stings.
Maceration Process: Place the nettles in a large container and cover them with water.
Let this sit for 24-36 hours, allowing the stinging substances to dissipate, resulting in a dark, potent liquid.
Dilution: After a few days of maceration, dilute the concentrated nettle liquid with clean water in a ratio of 1:10.
Usage:
The diluted nettle macerate can be used to water plants, providing both nourishment and protection from pests like aphids, which are known for damaging plants and affecting harvest quality.
Benefits:
This natural solution not only ensures optimal plant growth but also acts as an effective natural insecticide, keeping harmful insects and pests at bay.
By incorporating nettle macerate into your gardening routine, you can achieve healthier plants and a more vibrant garden without the adverse environmental effects associated with chemical fertilizers.
