Sucralose. A zero calorie artificial sweetener.
It's often used in the tastiest supplements, protein bars, sugar-free syrups, diet sodas, sugar-free jams and candies, etc.
๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฆ:
Studies have shown it can reduce the number of good bacteria in your gut by half which can also disrupt the absorption of nutrients.
A healthy gut microbiome is important because it relates to you having a strong immune system.
It also has been linked to inflammation in the body.
An off microbiome can also negatively affect your hormone levels and can heighten depression and anxiety.
๐๐ก๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง:
Look for foods sweetened with monk fruit or stevia instead.
Stick to natural sources of sugar such as honey, agave, or even blended dates.
Unfortunately, it can be hard to find supplements and sugar-free foods that don't use sucralose.
However, it's best to stick to a whole, natural food diet where there are the least amounts of ingredients used as possible (1-3 is ideal).
It's been estimated that 340mg of sucralose is safe to ingest, however, I don't like to take my chances and try to avoid it as much as possible. For reference, a single packet of Splenda contains 12mg of sucralose.
So, be careful with foods labelled "SUGAR-FREE" because they commonly use sucralose as a substitute and if you're ingesting large amounts of these types of foods, it can be harmful.
What are some natural sugar-free alternatives that you love? Let me know in the comments below!
