It is a natural occurrence that plaque and tartar build up on the surfaces of our teeth over time. While natural flora made up of healthy bacteria are used break down food and prepare it for digestion, harmful bacteria tend to grown and multiply with refined sugars in our diet leading to the formation of the harmful plaque. Left to its own devices, plaque can harden and calcify, resulting in tartar buildup.

Tartar is too hard for either your toothbrush or mouth wash to effectively remove. Your dental hygienist is trained in the safe removal of plaque without damaging the protective enamel on your teeth.

Tartar can build up along the gum-line, resulting in inflammation and redness of the gums and potential for tooth decay. Gum disease (periodontal disease) results in the loss of more teeth than cavities in people over age 35. No matter how eventful the upcoming months become, supervise that your family is brushing twice a day for 2 minutes. Brushing alongside your children for 2 minutes, twice a day for the three months of summer gives you 6 extra hours together, so make the most of them!

SNACKING
As the temperature rises, it’s common for families to sip and snack during sports tournaments, festivals or nearly any community event. Consider sugary drinks as treats to enjoy once in a while, instead offer water. Taking a break from snacking is healthy for your teeth too, it allows saliva to wash away food and strengthen teeth.

Have teeth cleaned (scaled) professionally to remove plaque, receive oral hygiene instructions and a customized treatment plan!

Dental hygienists will also provide:

• Assessment of the teeth, gums and mouth.
• Fluoride applications or other agents to strengthen and desensitize teeth, as well as provide extra protection against decay.
• Instruction on the most effective way to brush and clean between teeth.
• Education on reducing risk factors for enamel wear and preventing gum recession.
• Information on various oral care products and how to use them.
• Counselling and educational materials on diet and nutrition.
