As a pediatric specialist, I work from the perspective that the sensory system of the child is the first point of departure for any therapeutic intervention to progress.

Primitive Reflexes, and how they affect kiddos in the classroom!

Primitive reflexes assist in survival at birth —most develop in utero. If a primitive reflex is retained—that is, still present—after 12 months of age, challenges may arise.

🌟Integrating retained reflexes can be done at any age, even in adults!

Does your child struggle with:

- Anxiety
- Clumsy
- Poor hand-eye coordination
- Poor handwriting
- Low muscle tone
- W-sitting and/or toe-walking
- Challenges sitting still - ADHD symptoms
- Bedwetting past the age of 7

Let’s look to how to support our children, when they have a tough time.

Remember all behaviors arecommunication and have meaning!

Our children do not want to make our lives difficult, they are communicating that life is difficult for them.

So what can we do as a parent when our children are acting out!

Start with.. your expectations .. what is it you want for your child?

What can I do to ground myself?
( we all have a tipping point)

What can I do to connect with my child, And meet them where they are at!

Step back
- What happened in their day? Because most of the time it’s not what is happening in the moment, but a cumulation of many things.
- Did your child sleep enough
- Eat enough
- Was there a Power struggle between siblings?
- Maybe they had a bad day at school?
- what need is not being met?

Because we all know that certain behaviors can come out of nowhere!!

Yes! Heavy work activities playa a role in your kiddo's ability to learn, focus, attend, and participate in everyday tasks. Heavy work provides proprioceptive input in our muscles and joints.

- Auditory transition tools (“clean up song”)

My personal favorite is "All Done Bucket"

When it is time to be all done with a toy or an activity, bring the all-done bucket to your child or student and help them put the object in the container. This works with toys, tablets, playdough, crayons…almost anything!
