What is Equibow?

Hey Friends! My name is Calla Martin and I am a Certified Equi-Bow Practitioner. I also enjoy giving lessons on, working with, and training horses.

I was fortunate enough to grow up with horses in my life for as long as I can remember. My family has raised Appaloosas for over 25 years and continue to do so, meaning my passion for horses grew before I could walk, and basically grew with me as I learned to run, leap, and eventually ride through the pastures, spending every moment that I could surrounded by my horses. And now... I couldn’t imagine a life without them. I grew up riding in 4-H, pony club, gymkhana, cattle penning, trail riding in the mountains, and ranch roping. I have also competed in show jumping, as well as on the western equestrian team at University of Kentucky, where I also assisted with the family horse breeding program. Throughout my university career in Kentucky and Colorado I had the opportunity to work at multiple show barns riding world class horses. I have a variety of experience in multiple disciplines, giving me a well rounded exposure to different horses, and different disciplines. I have also completed my Diploma in Animal Science Technology. My goal has always been to support the equine partners in our lives, whether in competition, pleasure, or just companionship. One of my favourite quotes “frustration begins where knowledge ends” describes the point in my life that I had begun feeling like I had reached an obstruction with some horses. I had never felt helpless before, and I was beginning to question why horses were acting the way they were. This wasn’t the first time I had thought that, but it was the first time I was listening to my instinct. Was it pain, frustration, or just plain ignorance they were portraying? I wanted to close the gap in understanding what was really going on in their minds when they were acting out. I wanted to be more understanding of the horses I was working with, and that is when Equi-Bow found its way into my life. I studied/completed practical studies for eight months before receiving my certification, and have continued to learn ever since. My goal is to have both an inclusive and well rounded program that incorporates training as well as the body support that Equi-Bow can provide.

So What is Equi-Bow?

Equi-bow is a unique mix of Bowen, Feldenkrais, and Cranio-Sacral therapy. Through Equi-Bow we are able to access the nervous system through a series of gentle moves over different areas of the body. This allows for neuromuscular re-patterning to occur. These moves will send impulses to the rest of the body, allowing structural and energetic change to take place. As Equi-Bow supports the body in healing itself, it can take up to a week for the body to integrate changes such as softening of the fascia, lymphatic drainage, and increasing blood flow to take place. Equi-Bow supports our horses physically as well as mentally. Have you ever thought that your horse is acting out of character? More often than not our horses can act poorly in reaction to something they may be experiencing physically. We want to support our horses while allowing them to move in the most balanced and correct way. We also want them to be happy while performing as optimally and efficient as they can for us. This may mean different things to different horse owners, perhaps a horse that can run faster times, have more endurance, complete more precise movements, or becoming stronger to rope a bull in the pasture. Our main goal is to be able to have our equine partners to be able to perform at their full potential.
