This is great news! A community where the services that save/help the marginalized are more accessible is a stronger community. We can't allow illegal options that hurt/kill the marginalized to continue to be better promoted and more accessible than services that help.

I can see why communities are concerned about schools near sites like this but I also know use starts way earlier than most people realize. Two students who started using during grade school when I was in school were dead by the time they reached high school where I grew up. There were no services whatsoever to help them in our community.

In London, when I went door to door to talk to the local community around my pharmacy I had a kid walk up to me--in a nice neighbourhood with new houses and manicured lawns--who wasn't even shy about asking to buy opioids illegally. This was a grade school-aged kid! I was shocked, and obviously took a bit of time to explain why opioids are dangerous and why use is a bad idea.

The reality is that as soon as a young person experiences a first major life change and is in a community that allows for unmet emotional needs illegal drug suppliers or maybe just experimenting with medications to feel better will reach someone. Drug use begins at a young age but can happen at any age.

We all experience difficulties and when you get half the story on what drugs do (ie. leave out withdrawal and side effects) throw in some peer pressure even illegal drugs can seem like great solutions.

After years of tumultuous planning, London's first permanent supervised consumption facility will soon open.

I can't recommend this yet, because this is just one person's experience, but I'll keep an eye out for more evidence on this topic. Perhaps if you or someone you know is suffering a similar problem there is some way to access the therapy in Ontario.
