Exposure therapy is one of the most effective, science-backed treatments for PTSD and anxiety. By safely and gradually facing fears, it retrains your brain’s fear circuits, calming the amygdala (fear center), strengthening the prefrontal cortex (emotional control), and updating the hippocampus (memory) so triggers feel less threatening.
Through safe, step-by-step exposure plans that rebuild confidence and function, occupational therapists use these principles to help clients re-engage in feared or avoided daily activities. Common exposure work we do, include taking public transit, shopping in busy stores, reconnecting with old friends, or returning to work.
