Let’s talk about Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) comes from the theory that “what you think and how you act affects how you feel” and that by changing your thoughts and behaviours, you can change your feelings. This has been proven to be true, and CBT has been shown to be effective in many studies of depression and anxiety. But it requires more than thought stopping and replacement, there is an essential element missing and that is the emotion in the body. How do you make sense of when bad things happen to good people? Sometimes it feels like the world is against us, bringing nothing but pain or misery. We all need a belief system to make sense of painful events. Some people have religious beliefs that provide sense and comfort, but helpful beliefs don’t necessarily have to be from a religious system. It could be believing the universe supports life, or it could be that tragic events are an opportunity for learning and growth. Or it could be that human beings have a higher quality of life and more rights now than ever before in human history – that we are continually moving toward better conditions over time. Ask yourself if you have comforting beliefs to turn to in times of tragedy. Science shows that folks who do, feel better, cope better, and stay healthier in times of stress.
