What is Orofacial Myofunctional therapy? Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) are a variety of disorders that involve abnormal function of the oral and facial muscles during swallowing and at rest. Speech Language Pathologists are not only communicating experts, we are also trained to assess/treat swallowing disorders! Why? The muscles involved in producing speech are the same muscles involved in ‘deglutition’ (swallowing). Dysphagia is a term used to refer to disordered/impaired ability to swallow.
