Growing up, I spoke really fast and spent most of my young and early adult life in a highly reactive and dysregulated state. I was twitchy, jumped at every sound or sudden occasion and easily startled. As a child I was very close to being sent to a psychiatrist and put on prescription medications for being deemed 'too crazy'.

It wasn't until I discovered breathwork at 23, that I realized I could regulate my nervous system. That I could actually feel calm, less agitated and manage my stress easily.

That there were several automatic responses ingrained in my nervous system and practicing breathwork could help me release and repattern them for my own well being.

- The average human living in the city is exposed to several stimulating stressors, such as a diverse array of sound, noise, smells, sights, & other nervous systems (people)

- This doesn't include the stimulation from things such as unwanted thoughts, feelings, difficult experiences at home, at work and even unprocessed trauma

- These stressors can cause an activation response in the nervous system inducing increased heart rate, alertness & sensitivity, which contribute to shortness of breath and anxiety if regulation is not available

- The central nervous system processes and stores all of this information via the brain, vagal nerves and spinal cord

- When your nervous system is unable to regulate (feel safe) and process this information, a host of dysfunctions can occur, such as fatigue, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, brain fog, dizziness, depression, nausea, inflammation ,and gastro intestinal issues

- Interacting with other people also becomes increasingly difficult (fighting, avoidance, irritation, anger, bullying)

- There are several ways to help relax your nervous system and increase feelings of safety, which assists you in the regulation process

- Pleasant sounds and vibrations, humming, singing, co regulation with another regulated system, breathing in a easy way, gentle movement, muscle relaxation, and more

Here at North Van Breathwork, I work with you to help regulate your nervous system.

Through connected breathing and light bodywork, we effectively re-train your nervous system to regulate itself, increasing your well-being and your capacity, resiliency, and ability to navigate difficulty and stress.

What happens in a clinical breathwork session?

- your nervous system follows a bell curve along with your breath
- breathing in, you experience sympathetic arousal (activation)
- breathing out, you experience parasympathetic tone (rest)
- through this, you experience your capacity for stress and rest
- neurotransmitters like cortisol, epenephrin, norepinephrine, serotonin and acetylcholine are released, inducing altered states of consciousness
- your brain waves modulate from Alpha to Theta, inducing relaxation and non-sleep deep rest, which is crucial for your nervous system to regulate itself
- the limbic system of the brain is activated, inviting the subconscious mind to bring repressed memories and feelings to the surface to be seen, felt and integrated
- with trauma-informed bodywork and touch points by the practitioner, your body may experience a greater flow of energy in places long dormant, increasing a felt sense of calm, vigor and freedom
- after your session, time is given to integrate via verbally processing your experience
- after care is provided by the practitioner at your request
- over the course of multiple treatments, your baseline breath pattern begins to change, giving you more space for vitality and navigating life with ease, and patience

"Our first meeting, over 30 years ago, was unforgettable. When we sat down, he reached to his left, placed his hand on a large rock lying on a table, and said
"This is my clock. I operate at geologic speed. And if you are going to work with the soul, you need to learn this rhythm, because this is how the soul moves."
Then he pointed at a small clock also sitting there and added
"It hates this."
What an amazing thing to tell a young therapist. It is the single most important thing I ever learned about therapy, about working with the soul.
I share this story with every person I ever work with; I use it as a means of calming the urgency to change and helping patients return to a rhythm that enables them to listen once again to their own soul."

Any attempt to dictate what thoughts, feelings, and sensations are proper or improper creates a breeding ground for guilt and shame. ~ Peter Levine

One way to experience a calm, internal state free of negation is with your breath.

Through acknowledging what's present with yourself - worry, anxiety, ridicule, fear, sadness, guilt, shame - things that tend to weigh heavily in the nervous system are released from the responsibility of being a burden.

Breathe easy.

We often try to control our environment and circumstances, and it shows in our breath.

Constriction of the throat, of the ribcage diaphragm, tension of the jaw and esophagus, even in yogic 'ujjayi' breathing.

This is not a bad thing.

However like anything, a pattern over time becomes a habit.

When constriction of the breath becomes a habit, difficulty ensues.

Trouble sleeping, trouble with stress, trouble with anxiety, trouble with letting go.

How can you make your external environment match your internal environment?

With your breath.

Breathe easy.

Be still the mind in the face of fear.

Fear elicits a sympathetic response from the nervous system.

That means when you are experiencing fear, you enter a heightened fight or flight state. Your heart rate and temperature increases, your breath quickens, stress chemicals adrenaline and cortisol spike in your brain, and your brains amygdala (think of it as your emotional regulator) kicks into overdrive.

In this heightened state, your system is susceptible to hold or release fear and depending on the relationship you have with it, can elicit a negative response.

In a breath repatterning treatment, we elicit the same response to fear and connect to a calm state so that you may establish a clear relationship with it, helping you manage your reponse to fear better.

What is a vision but a series of goals achieved over time?

What is a goal but a series of small habits done consistently?

Your breath is the most consistent thing in your life you will encounter.

At an average of 22,000 breaths a day, your body's physiological makeup responds to each one - changing how you think, how you feel, how you behave

and..

it affects many other internal functions - your lymphatic systems ability to detox, your heart rates ability to calm or stress you, even the ability of your digestive system to help process the food you eat.

This deeply affects your bodies capacity to thrive in the face of challenge and adversity.

Each breath you take has the ability to change your life.

The mind-body connection is incredibly powerful.

Your thoughts, feelings, beliefs and attitudes directly influence your bodily functions and behaviors.

In the same way, your body - how you move, how you breath, what you eat, how you posture, directly influences your mind.

Connect with your body, find congruence.

It starts in your breath.

What is Clinical Breathwork?

It is therapeutic approach to breathwork which utilizes bodywork and neuroscience to repattern your breathing.

Your breath is the foundation of your health. It regulates blood chemistry, organ function and your nervous system.

When you breathe, your blood chemistry is altered via the exchange of chemical gases, affecting how you think, feel and behave.

Clinical breathwork is an opportunity to repattern your 3 diaphragms of breathing - your throat, diaphragm, and pelvic floor.

Throat - Thyroid/Parathyroid, affecting energy levels.

Ribcage diaphragm - Adrenals, affecting metabolism, blood pressure, response to stress.

Pelvic floor diaphragm - Sexual organs, affecting sexual function and fertility.

Restriction in any of these areas of your breath affects your nervous system, causing undue anxiety, stress, fear, sluggishness and emotional dysregulation.

Experiencing breath repatterning in a treatment may help you feel more grounded, steady, powerful and at ease in your body.
