Today is World Mental Health Day. I don't usually post about politics, but with over 1.1 million people in our province identifying as having a disability, it's appropriate to ask for more mental health support in our province. Here is more information, shared from the Autism BC newsletter, that may help you make a decision on who to support, if this matters to you or your loved ones:

*It’s important to note that this post is for informational purposes only.*

The BC Green Party is the only party that has proposed increasing Disability Assistance from $1,483 to $2,400 for a single person. They also plan to remove clawbacks and offer a year of guaranteed assistance for new recipients, allowing people to assess their needs without continuous reporting.

The BC NDP has outlined several policies, including bringing the HandyDART service under government control to improve service and affordability. They also plan to increase Community Living BC homeshare rates, ensure people can keep the new Canada Disability Benefit, and adjust the spousal rule to help more individuals rise out of poverty.

The BC Conservative Party does not currently have specific policies addressing the needs of the disabled or autistic community in its platform.

As for the BC United Party, they withdrew from the race in August and are no longer in consideration for this election.

Advance voting runs from October 10-13 and 15-16. Election Day is October 19. You can learn more at elections.bc.ca.

β€œIn cases of TBI, neurofeedback is probably better than any medication or supplement." --Richard Brown, MD; Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia, College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY

When the brain suffers damage, often slower brainwaves β€” delta and theta β€” rush to the site of the injury to begin repairing. These are the brainwaves babies, toddlers and youth spend much time in while their brains are developing because these are the cell growth frequencies.

These slow waves are the waves of angiogenesis, neuroplasticity, and neurogenesis. Thus, it makes perfect sense that the brain would produce these waves when trying to regenerate damaged tissue.

In many cases of head injury the patterns of delta and theta become locked, entrenched, and habitual, preventing growth out of the concussed / stroke / TBI disabled state.

This week is Mental Health Week!

The theme this year is compassion: for ourselves and for others. It's something we all need to practice, not just mental health workers.
Take some time today to see how you could take an action that would promote compassion toward yourself or another.
The effects are felt both ways and grow from there ❀πŸ₯°

🧠 Neuroscience News: Link Between Smaller Cerebellum & PTSD 🧠

New research uncovered a significant association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a reduction in cerebellar volume. This study, one of the largest of its kind, demonstrates that individuals with PTSD have cerebellums that are approximately 2% smaller than those without the disorder.

While the cerebellum is well-known for its role in coordinating movement and balance, it also plays a crucial role in emotions and memory, which are impacted by PTSD. This research emphasizes the importance of considering the cerebellum in PTSD diagnosis and treatment, potentially leading to more effective and lasting therapies for those affected by the condition.

Key Facts:
1. PTSD affects about 6% of adults who have experienced trauma and is characterized by increased fear and traumatic event reliving.
2. The cerebellum, known for its role in balance and movement, contains over half of the brain’s 86 billion nerve cells and influences emotion and memory.
3. Smaller cerebellums were consistently observed in PTSD patients, with more severe PTSD linked to even smaller cerebellar volume.
