Now when we do shadow work I am always reminded of Medusa and she always reminds me to be brave enough to face my own shadow and to hold a tender space for clients who face theirs. She tells a story about her becoming dark monster with a head of snakes who turned people to stone. Out of the shadow she asks a question, has the darkness you hide always been a part of you? Because she knows how that darknesss takes over. She knows. Before Medusa became a dreadful monster she had monstrous things happen to her. Medusa was a beautiful being. Many suitors aspired to win her heart but one day Poseidon laid eyes on the gorgeous young woman and immediately wanted to possess her. Medusa was a chaste woman and wanted nothing to do with Poseidon. The poor woman did her utmost to escape from the determined god, but to no avail, he persisted in his attempt to seduce her.
Medusa attempted to take refuge in the temple of Athena, hoping that the goddess would protect her, but Poseidon paid no heed to the surroundings and proceeded to have his way with the unwilling victim.
Filled with rage for the desecration of her temple, Athena punished Medusa transforming her into the beast with the writhing snake hair, making her so horrifying that gazing upon her would turn onlooker to stone. We see how Medusaโs terrifying form as a monster with serpentโs hair was the result of her own violation and how her early trauma transformed her and turned her from victim to perpetrator who killed with one look. Similarly previous trauma may compromise human psyche and nervous system and continue to live through generations, often lurking in the shadows of our subconscious, never talked about. After Medusa was defeated two magical entities emerged out of her wounds. One is Pegasus the winged horse who can soar to great heights and is a symbol of a body, instinctual knowledge and transcendence. Another character was Chrysler one-eyed giant with the golden sword representing penetrating truth and clarity. Together, they suggest true transformation through the living body. And we too, have the power to work through the Trauma Monster and lay it to Rest In Peace, release that beautiful winged horse of transcendence and the warrior with the sword of piercing truth of who we really are.
