Helmets on Kids Event a Huge Success!

Neuro-Rehab Services and Torkin Manes LLP were proud sponsors of the Helmets on Kids Event, held at East York Town Center on May 30, 2015. Families started lining up in the wee hours on Saturday morning, and 400 lucky kids (on bikes!) received a free helmet- for many of these youngsters it was their first helmet ever!

The police were on hand to fit the helmets, the Scouts ran an obstacle course teaching kids bike road safety and NRS volunteers provided information on Concussion prevention and treatment.

On June 3, 2015 NRS participated in the Rally to stop the cuts to SABs coverage at Queen's Park.

Thank you to all members of the community who came out today to speak out against these cuts. What a great turnout - there must have been more than 500 people! Thanks also to the many inspirational speakers, including Tammy Kirkwood of FAIR and Jagmeet Singh, NDP MPP. There was media at the event, including CTV Toronto and the Toronto Sun.

While we were protesting, the Budget Bill 91 was passed. But we must continue to speak out! Please go to the following website to sign the petition against these cuts: https://www.change.org/p/ontario-mpps-finance-minister-charles-sousa-stop-reducing-ontario-accident-benefits

Neuro Rehab Services Goes International!

On May 5, 2015 Harriette Brown, Co-Director of NRS, was invited to present to Occupational Therapists of Alyn Hospital Pediatric & Adolescent Rehabilitation Center in Jerusalem, Israel to share with them Neuro-Rehab Services’ successful community re-entry programs for those with traumatic brain injuries.

She provided an overview of the specialized 1:1 assessments and programs NRS provides for local GTA clients in their home, community, and/or school, as well as the e-rehab and Cloud Based Applications for clients in remote areas across Ontario that are unable to access the specialized services they need.

Harriette is thrilled to have been asked to provide consultation services to Hebrew University in Jerusalem as part of their mission to research e-Rehab programs.

Morgan, a Certified Child Life Specialist, has been working with The Daisy Fund, a Kenyan cancer NGO since 2006.

This month Morgan prepares to provide the 7th annual Child Life Training and clinical supervision at the Sally Test Pediatric Centre in Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. This training has allowed for the successful implementation of a locally sustainable child life team of 7 working to support children’s coping in all areas of the hospital, with 4 additional child life assistants to provide bedside activities to patients.
During the course of Morgan’s visit in Kenya, a qualitative research study will be completed that looks at the lived experiences of the Child Life Health Workers implementing a new supportive discipline/profession within healthcare in Kenya.

After providing the child life training, Morgan will participate in the annual Kenyan National Retinoblastoma Strategy where all the team members across Kenya working with pediatric oncology come together to collaborate on enhancing communication between disciplines and hostpials, increasing training and improving positive patient outcomes

You can read more about the child life program Morgan provides through the Daisy Fund at http://www.daisyfund.org/programs/rati/childlife.html

You can read more about the child life program at the Sally Test Pediatric Centre at http://www.ampathkenya.org/our-programs/children's-services/sally-test-paediatric-centre-(stpc)/

The complete wellbeing of children with cancer should be a humanitarian priority. Children respond better to treatment when they are calm and coping well. Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund is developing a child life program to help give children the best possible quality of life during treatment and beyond.
