"One of the reasons I stopped writing this newsletter is that my partner and I accidentally became homesteaders over the summer. The 1940s house we moved into has four productive fruit trees on the property: plum, pear, apple, and quince. Turns out, our neighbourhood - formerly an orchard - is currently experiencing one of its most productive years in recent history.

First, it was the plums right as we moved in at the end of July. Bowl after bowl of plums from our yard and the neighbour’s urban farm. We learned to make jam, what kind of pectin to use, how to can, and the basics of making a fruit crumble, all while unpacking and furnishing a space that is much larger than our former 1-bedroom basement suite.

Now we’re in the midst of the pear and apple harvest, fully ignoring hundreds of quinces we have no idea what to do with (jelly, we’ve heard)..."

I ran my first half marathon at the Royal Victoria Marathon (RVM) this weekend! A few reasons why running a half marathon was HUGE for me:

✅ Until last year I could hardly run a few blocks, let alone 21.1kms 🤯 Big thanks to .nutritionn and .performance for playing a major role in my health and fitness journey, and helping me get to a place where this was even possible 🙏🏼

✅ I've been a slow(ish) runner since I can remember and early on, I convinced myself that I shouldn't run at all 🥹 Participating in races has given me perspective that I'm not the fastest nor the slowest, just somewhere in between!

✅ I wanted to quit many times during training and even sold my bib to triathlete .0 who graciously sold it back to me! 🙏🏼 When I couldn't stop crying about not running the half, I realized it meant more to me than I thought 😭

✅ I injured my knee three weeks ago after an 18km long run, and had to reach out to physiotherapist and craniosacral therapist to help me recover. After a few appointments and some self-administered acupuncture, cupping, and gua sha at home (and a lot of rest), I made a full recovery and ran without pain!

✅ TMI: I got my period the day before the race 😵‍💫 Herbalist (who ran the 5km 🎉) saved the day and hand-delivered extra strength Advil and Shepherd's Purse tincture to reduce bleeding during the race. I was extra diligent about electrolytes, carb loaded, skipped my shake-out run, and sent it on the course the next day with minimal discomfort.

All things considered, the race went according to plan and I finished in 2:27 (I aimed for 2:30). My calves cramped up a bit at the end but overall, I'm really happy about how it went! 🎉🎉🎉

Shout out to my partner .shelleau who witnessed the whole arc of my half marathon drama while training for the full marathon and supported me the whole way 🥹 He absolutely crushed his marathon time, coming in at 3:16, down from 3:53 last year!

Finally, thank you to my dear friends and Kyle Bridge who cheered me on at km 9 and the finish line! Knowing you were there made all the difference ❤️

Beyond grateful🥲
