At TAC we believe everyone should have the opportunity to participate in sport, so we are taking the plunge to support Special Olympics BC! 🥶

Help us reach our goal of $1000 for by donating at the link below! 💙

Special Olympics BC is committed to enriching the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities and, in turn, the lives of their family members, friends and everyone they’ve touched. Special Olympics BC provides high-quality year-round sport programs and competitions that help people with intellectual disabilities celebrate personal achievement and gain confidence, skills, and friendships.

The pandemic has a long-lasting, far-reaching impact on athletes with intellectual disabilities, who were already far too familiar with the pain of isolation. More than ever, your support is needed to rebuild all of the year-round, in-person sport programs that create empowering connections, open hearts and minds to inclusion, and break down barriers.

This year, the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics BC will play a vital part in helping athletes get back to the sports and the SOBC family that matter to them.

What best activity to do when I’m trying to get back to moving again?

I get this question a lot especially from people dealing with chronic pain and injury recovery. Often my follow up question is to ask “what do you enjoy?” Of course there may be some parameters we need to follow but if you’re trying to force something you don’t enjoy then likely you won’t feel motivated to do it. Plus when you enjoy doing something you will release more endorphins and it’ll be an easier habit to build.

There may be some exercises specific that are recommended for you with whatever is happening but overall movement is medicine and it’s great if you can enjoy what you are doing for movement 🏃‍♀️

Do you have persisting pain and use massage as a form of treatment? If so what’s your understanding of why or how it works?

Have you considered it might not be exactly why you think? It’s less about making physiological changes to the tissue and more about relaxing the nervous system!

I love to incorporate different principles of pain science and yoga to therapeutic massage. Next time you’re having a massage can you focus more on your breath than letting your mind wander? Can you focus on longer exhales? Is there a way to foster a deeper sense of relaxation?
