The Iliotibial Band (IT Band) is a very large tendon that attaches the Gluteus Maximus and the Tensor Fascia Latae (TFL) to the leg. It stretches down from the side of your hip to attach just below the knee on the side of the leg.

IT Band Friction Syndrome happens when there is abnormal or increased tension on the IT Band or extra friction in an area. This is felt commonly on the outside of the knee with pain and swelling.

When it comes to our IT Band, we tend to try and stretch it, roll it, cup it and scrape it to get some kind of relief of the pain and tightness felt. But, the IT Band is a piece of connective tissue that is largely influenced by the muscles it attaches to. We sometimes miss stretching and release the Glute and TFL.

IT Band Friction Syndrome can be an acute or chronic injury that many people suffer from. As an AT and RMT, I work to gain mobility in the whole leg and back and fix any biomechanics that may be causing the extra tension and friction.

๐ŸŸข Q & A Wednesday ๐ŸŸข

"Do you recommend the posture bands?" ๐Ÿคท

Posture bands help pull the shoulders back and keep you standing up straighter. I am asked a lot about whether they are something that is beneficial when trying to retrain your posture.

I usually don't recommend posture bands. They are more of a bandaid. They may help put you in better posture in the short term but eventually your body will just get used to the band doing the work. I have also had some people who start to have numbness or tingling in their hands because the bands put pressure on the brachial plexus in their shoulders.

You are better to strengthen the back and stretch the chest as well as functionally training the body to hold itself.

Did you know that your shoes have an expiry date?

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Once your shoes have holes and visible wear, it is already too late. Think of them like your car tires. They only last so long.

๐Ÿ‘ž Shoes should be replaced every 500 miles or so. I recommend about every 6 months if you are on your feet every day.

๐Ÿฅพ Before you put your summer shoes away for the season, think about replacing them all together. Also look at your winter boots because they wear out also.

"What is the weirdest injury you've treated?" ๐Ÿค”

The strangest injury I have treated was a tooth in a forearm during a basketball game. Let's just say a player went for a layup, elbows another in the face by accident and ended up with a tooth in their arm.

Luckily, it was a 'baby' tooth, so they didn't have to worry about getting it replaced.

โ€œIโ€™ll Come to Youโ€

I have had the passion to help people for as long as I can remember. As an Athletic Therapist, I strive to help everyone from elite athletes to weekend warriors to industrial workers. No injury is too small. I treat all musculoskeletal injuries (muscles, bones, ligaments, and joints) so that you can get back to the life you love to live. I am also trained in the rehabilitation and return to activity after sustaining a concussion.

I started this business in particular after noticing many people who cannot make it to an appointment because they donโ€™t have a vehicle, work till 6, or canโ€™t get a babysitter. Those should not hold anyone back from getting the treatment they deserve.
